or do you check, on the basis that there's a reasonable chance of there being lard in the pastry?

They can also have suet in the mincemeat so I would check

I assume that most mince pies (especially home made ones) have suet in the pastry. (I am not a veggie, but know that veg mincemeat is necessary for monce pies for veggie guests)

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 14/12/2009 12:25

monce pies? ponce pies?

Blu · 14/12/2009 12:29

monce pies are the veggie ones, as any fule no.

Oh, and of course it's the moncemeat that has suet in, not the pastry.

hatwoman · 14/12/2009 12:37

just looked at the ingredients on my mincemeat - and the suet is vegetable suet. but there's lard in that there pastry. (which is why it melts in your mouth and tastes so good...). I have a feeling I asked this last year...

mine have got orange in the pastry and sweetened cream cheese in them. does that make them ponce pies?

Mine are quite ponce ish - have lemon and ground almonds and cream and egg in the (very yummy) pastry.

hatwoman · 14/12/2009 13:35

mmm sounds lovely.

i always assume that shop bought ones are beggie (if i'm out somewhere that food is provided), as IME they usually are (but that doesn't take into account that cheaper shops like aldi or netto might not have veggie ingredients (although the last time i bought aldi ones, they were veggie)).
homemade ones i will avoid if the maker isn't there, or ask if they are.
pastry can have lard, suet can be beef (in the mincemeat)
