Freezing homemade soup

Made French Onion soup last night for the first time and it was very yummy. But I now have loads leftover--its currenty in a soup bag in the fridge.
-Is it ok to freeze?
-If so can it stay in the soup bag or does it need to be transferred into a container?
-When I come to serve it again, can it be heated from frozen in the microwave or does it need thawing?

Sorry for all the questions!

Fine to freeze (as long as it doesn't have cream in it, which I'm assuming i doesn't).

I usually freeze in a container but only because I don;t have 'soup bags' - is this some other kitchen gadget i should be wasting my money on investing in?

I would defrost in the microwave first, but I know my mum reheats from frozen and has done for years.

soup bags

Thanks Poledra I will go shove it in the freezer as you're right, there's no cream in it. That'll save us from eating it every day for the next week! Do you happen to know, wise one, how long these things keep for?

I freeze my soup in soup bags, it's fine.

If it's meat fee which yours obviously is, I would happily heat from frozen.

Oooh, might have known it would be Lakeland at gusseted bags.

It says there you can freeze in the bags anyway. I have eaten soup that's been in the freezer for 6 months, but I would think 3-4 months would be the recommended time.

i freeze soup with cream in (stilton and celery, very tasty...), are you not supposed to do that? why not? it always seems to defrost fine.

and i heat it straight from frozen because we don't have a microwave.

Cream can split when it's been frozen then reheated, so that's the reason for not freezing cream soups. It's (supposed) to be better if you freeze without the cream, then add after you've reheated it.

If it ain't broke, though, don't fix it....
