German food - traditional recipes?

Any suggestions for an informal supper party on a German theme? Need ideas for food that can be prepared in advance, not too expensive, to feed about 15. I know nothing about German food: suggestions on wine and beer also gratefully received. TIA

eemie, that sounds nice! Cantatas I guess rather than the B Minor Mass (or you'd better warn the neighbours).
If you can get to a Waitrose they stock good German wines as opposed to the dreaded teen guzzle Black Tower. We drink (or rather these days I watch dh drink) quite a lot of Alsace wines which are similar in style, but I don't know much about German fine wines, to my shame.

anyone got a recipe for shpetzle (?sp) noodles - got a press a couple of years ago but can't find the ingredients for the batter - we've had them layered with fried onions and melted cheese - very nice, very fattening.

Found a recipe for spätzle here - looks quite a handy site (if not very exciting visually)

thanks babster - we'll cook some in your honour
