Breakfast ideas for 18 month olds please ...

DT's have totally gone off Weetabix & Readybrek - usually done with mashed banana. Have tried substituting raisins but no luck. They will eat scrambled egg but they love omelette and french toast for lunch so don't want to overload with eggs. They usually eat a slice of toast between them after their cereal. Any suggestions please - have tried a muesli made with oats soaked in water with grated apple and nat yogurt or double cream, baby porridge, natural yogurt with mashed banana ... can't really find anything to get them both eating simultaneously.

Would love a list of ideas please!

I know its not the healthiest thing but I mix a tiny bit of chocolate spread in with the Readybrek.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 08/12/2009 20:42

Will they eat toast, a banana and a yoghurt? Nothing wrong with that

Have you tried honey in the ready brek? that might encourage them. What about normal porridge (rather than baby), any other cereals?

raisin toast is nice too.

DS loves porridge which I add a handful of frozen berries to to cool it down. He can't get enough of it.

Similar idea:
A few strawberries and raspberries mashed
1 banana mashed
2 tablespoons of natural yogurt
Half a weetabix or a tablespoon of wheatgerm
Some honey drizzled over the top.
My DD still loves it and she's nearly 6!

mixed fruits, cereal bars?, crumpets, muffins spread with peanut butter, pancakes as a treat, beans on toast, eggy bread, a yogurt with strawberries to dip in? hopefully thats helpfull to you?

onepieceoflollipop · 08/12/2009 20:45

Try other "plain-ish" cereals such as cornflakes or rice krispies.

Fruit salad - or whatever fruits you have chopped up.

Mix some fruit puree (jars or home made) into some natural yogurt if you prefer not to get flavoured yogurts.

As an occasional change try fruit bread toasted rather than plain. Or crumpets.

This thread is making me feel really guilty - my 18 month old has the same as ds and me - ie malties or rice crispies or some such.

She loves bagels and cream cheese/butter and jam as well.

Toast, banana & yogurt ... shall put that on the list. I just have this thing about cereal.

Have tried porridge but not with berries chucked in - that would give it a good colour and interest factor.

Yep, we've done honey in the Readybrek but it didn't make any difference. If, however, I put chocolate spread in it, the older boys will want it and one has a nut allergy so that kind of rules that out.

Two good ideas so far, please keep them coming!

Mine just eats plain porridge or weetabix or maybe an English muffin with butter. She loves pancakes or scrambled eggs at weekends. How much she eats is very variable though.

If they're eating the rest of the day maybe they're just not that hungry at breakfast time?

onepieceoflollipop · 08/12/2009 20:58

Millie do you have a thing about cereal because it means they get plenty of milk? I used to be a bit like that with dd1 who wouldn't eat milk. Readybrek is of course fab for levels of milk/fluid intake.

Would they drink a yogurt/milk/fruit smoothie? Or as a treat hot chocolate. my dd1 will drink cocoa. half teaspoon of cocoa mixed with tiny bit of sugar topped up with hot milk.

Cross-posts ... loads more ideas. Thank you! Am making a list as I sit here!

Piccalilli ... have wondered about the hunger thing ... they have a breastfeed before breakfast - but they used to eat breakfast even with the b/f.

Onepieceoflollipop ... no, it's not the milk more that cereal is a good solid fuel in your body. Remember the Readbrek ad ....

My DD likes:

Mini shredded wheats r raisin wheats

Soft, bready things - muffins, toast soldiers, brioche, raisin loaf. Her favourite spread is cream cheese. You could also go 'Continental' and give them cheese/ham with their bread

Yoghurt is a good one, mixed with various mashed or pureed fruit

Advent calendar chocolates? LOL! I can just picture it.

Crumpets, muffins etc - great, will be going for it. Brioche - can't buy it where we live .

Peanut butter is out cos of DS1's nut allergy. But so many great ideas here.

Thanks!!!!
