Is this going to be ok with my one year old? I realise washing is down to there poss being stones but what about dirt issues? Is is courting food poisoning?
Its bubbling away - eta 30 mins - any speedy answers appreciated as I used up allll the food in the house to make this!

I don't think I have ever washed lentils and we're all still here I even fed all my babies on red lentils without washing them. After all they are going to be boiled.

happysmiley · 06/12/2009 12:35

There'll be no food poisoning, just maybe a bit of grit. But I never wash lentils and they don't taste gritty.

Thanks for replying to someone clearly hysterical. As it happened, it was so unappetising that she refused it anyway.

Are you supposed to wash lentils before putting them in soup? I never have.

Kbear · 06/12/2009 13:40

I have never washed lentils. Didn't know you were supposed to!

aseriouslyblondemoment · 06/12/2009 16:47

i have never washed lentils and we're also here to tell the tale lol

SantaClausImWorthIt · 06/12/2009 16:48

Any bacteria would have been killed when you boiled the soup.

Stones and bits of grit are another matter ... !

ABetaDad · 06/12/2009 16:55

Dont worry. Just sieve the soup in case of stones.

StirlingInDaGrotto · 06/12/2009 17:06

Honestly? There could be stones in them??

I have never washed them.

Should I put them in the washing machine?

ABetaDad · 06/12/2009 17:11

They usually say in recipes to wash them and spread them out on a tray to pick out any stones.

This is what it says in Wikipedia:

"When lentils are prepared, they are first inspected for damaged lentils, stones and other foreign matter. Then they are rinsed until the water runs through and comes out clear. Some prefer to soak the lentils for an extended time and discard the water. This removes substances that may cause indigestion".
