it's really handy especially forbulky stuff
but I always tend to need something else - birthday card etc
Plus although they don't give you the old stuff deliberately it's not the same as choosing your own fresh stuff

Cheappinkfizz · 03/12/2009 08:42

YES!!!
I hate supermarkets

ClaireDeLoon · 03/12/2009 08:44

I think so, not just to save time but also I like being able to make my shopping list up over a few days adding stuff as I remember we need it. Then of course it saves the hell that is (to me) a busy supermarket. Plus the nearest decent sized one is 10 mins drive away etc etc

sazzerbear · 03/12/2009 08:44

thanks ladies, I too hate supermarkets so may be the way to go!Do they charge much to deliver?

We have been doing it recently because I can't lift after an operation and I'm really impressed TBH.

I tend not to forget things as I can go back and add to the list and the quality has been generally good. Not many substitues either.

Delivery with Tesco is £3.50 or £4.50 I think which I don't mind paying for someone else to shop for me.

ApplesinmyPocket · 03/12/2009 08:49

I've been doing it every week for seven years and love online shopping, especially when I think of all the hours I've saved driving out and trekking round the supermarket, putting stuff INto the trolley, getting it OUT at he checkout, back in the trolley, out of the trolley into the boot, out of the boot at home...

People will say they prefer to choose some things themselves (meat for example) but 95% of your weekly stuff is bulky dull things like nappies, washing powder, tins etc.

You will get substitutions occasionally (but you can send them back hassle-free) and these days I find they're mostly quite sensible ones, which wasn't always true in the past.

If you live any distance from the supermarket as I do, the delivery charge is quite reasonable and you definitely save money overall if you're anything like me - shopping in person, with or without DH and DCs, regularly cost me an extra £10 or so each time because of all the impulse buys we just couldn't resist!

mrspnut · 03/12/2009 08:54

Once you've been doing it a while, you'll find that 90% of your online shop can be done in under 5 minutes from your usuals list.

I also find that doing my shopping on a saturday morning in my pyjamas with a coffee in my hand is far more civilized than battling around the store with a trolley.

Saltire · 03/12/2009 09:10

I do it all the time and hate supermarkets with a passion. I get trolley rage. Also it saves me money, on the occasions when I do have to go to a supermarket, we spend more - example 2 weeks ago, spent £137 in Asda. Last 2 weeks my bills have been between £60-70. Even allowing for the cost of delivery - which is cheaper if you go for midweek deliveries, I find it still works out as a money saver.
I alternate between Asda and Sainsburys

PercyPigPie · 03/12/2009 12:13

We have been doing it for over seven years. Definitely saves money and ensures we eat healthier food (I inevitably put lots of lovely fatty and expensive food on the list and then take it all off again as I do my final check through!).

shoptilidrop · 03/12/2009 13:05

Yes, - ive also been doing it for years. I actually went to the supermarket today. It was a nightmare and i gave up after only doing half the shop.
Will finish it tomorrow and get it delivered tomorrow.
Also, it only takes me about 10 mins to do my shop online now - much quicker and far less hastle.

I've done it!! Thanks everyone, it was sooo easy and quick! Let's hope I don't get any dodgy substitutes though!!

NickeeS · 03/12/2009 16:01

Love it....and when I was pregnant the Asda man even put it all in the kitchen for me, bless him. All for £3.50, actually it is free as I pay for it with my Asda credit card
Why would anyone walk round the supermarket for an hour load evrything into a trolly, from the trolly to the checkout, back into the trolly, then into the car, then out of the car, and then out it all way. I much prefer just putting it away.

Hulababy · 03/12/2009 16:04

Have done it for past few years. It is great and saves me loads of time.

I use Ocado now so not relying on individual shoppers to go and chose stuff.

PeachyDrapedInSparklyTinsel · 03/12/2009 16:06

I often do it online, itdepends if DH is with me to help carry bags or not (we tend to shop at littlebutchers etc so much hgauling required if we do it in person).

I don't touch Asda as they have an annoying tendency to double up on some items and forget others, and substitute silly things- cereal with chocolate was not a great opne.however,Tesco OK,Sainsburys good and Waitrose (the trick is to take the free delivery intoa ccount and remember that their essentialsline is as good as any other brand so keeping costs down to budget) by far the best.

Oh and the waitrose man ids lovely- whereas the asda man whinged endlessly.

RGPargy · 03/12/2009 16:56

I tried Asda's home delivery service last week. I was quite impressed i have to say, although i was a little bit pissed off that they'd given me some bagels with an expiry date of the same day as my delivery date, which was scheduled for between 8 & 10pm!! The bagels were pretty much useless after a day as they'd gone stale.

I have also found that you need to be pretty organised too as the nearest delivery date is quite often in 2 days time.

Great for heavy/bulky items tho!

RGPargy · 03/12/2009 16:59

Oh and another good thing about my Asda delivery - i ended up with two packets of Lincolnshire sausages that I'd not ordered (or paid for!). Bonus! Sadly tho, it'll take us forever to get through them as we hardly eat sausages lol.

hattyyellow · 03/12/2009 17:00

Home grocery shopping is bliss. Especially if you have small DC you would otherwise have had to drag around shops.

Tesco refund you if they have got the best before date wrong. Ie, I ordered 8 yogurts, saw they expired the day after delivery, rang to complain and money was refunded that day.

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 03/12/2009 21:09

Have used Sainsburys and now use Ocado. We signed up for the Ocado On Demand where we pay £9.99 per month and can get a delivery of £40 worth of shopping for free. Sainsburys you could pay £3.50 for delivery if you spent £40 Tues, Weds or Thurs I think. With Sainsb and Ocado you book an hour time slot but with Sainsb you get £10 if they are late. With Ocado you don't automatically get anything but you can call Customer Services and ask for some compensation - usually £5. Sainsb were hardly ever late, Ocado have often been late - especially lately and if you book a delivery for an afternoon. Sainsb often didn't have stuff you had ordered but Ocado have never turned up with stuff missing. You also get a free copy of The Times with Ocado. It's fab the first time you get loads of bags delivered and you haven't' had to leave the house. I do miss looking out for reduced items as I go around a store but that's the only thing I miss.

ABetaDad · 03/12/2009 21:17

Yes. It saves time and stress. Our children have bene in a supermarket less than 10 times in their lives. Do it. You will never regret it.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 03/12/2009 21:19

love it, it saves me money. I only buy what we need, and don't get drawn into the chocolate eclair aisle...

FlyMeToDunoon · 03/12/2009 21:33

Sainsbury's delivery is free if you spend over £100.
I order every two weeks to do this.
Love it!

CardyMow · 03/12/2009 21:35

Waitrose delivery is excellent...I was the first person in my area to use the service when our new store opened and I got a whole year worth of delivery free!! The delivery man is becoming a firm friend, it's amazing, no more catching buses to overcrowded supermarkets where people are trying to kill you with their trolley's, I never overspend and I don't have to drag the DC's with me in the holidays!!

mmrred · 03/12/2009 21:42

Definitely, am a total convert. Have saved a fortune using meal planners and just being able to go into kitchen and check if we have enough of whatever to last until next week. Plus I now throw away far less and can do the shopping while the kids are in bed instead of in our valuable weekend time.
