What can I eat in my sandwiches that isn't cheese

I'm always eating cheese sarnies - normally with cucumber or marmite; but things have to change.

I'd love to lose some weight, but can never think of anything else to pop in the sarnies. If I buy ham I just tend to nibble it from the fridge so there is none left for sarnies.

Oh, and it has to be quick because I have a 3yr old fresh back from pre-school every day and 18 month old who doesn't like waiting for food for very long at lunchtime.

Any suggestions anyone - oh, and I hate egg and mayonnaise.

Tuna fish.
Houmous and grated carrot.
Cucumber on its own.
Little bit of grated cheddar with grated raw carrot and courgette.
Brie, grape and cranberry.
Avocado.

Um....will try and think of some more...

My favourite sandwich is a crisp sandwich - loads of butter and a whole packet of crisps squashed in there. I'm guessing that's not the kind of weight-loss suggestion that you're looking for, though .

I've just been floating through the threads, browsing for inspiration. Nothing has made my mouth water.

Untill a crisp sandwich was mentioned!!

thinly sliced ham with mango chutney

chicken with Mrs Elswood pickled cucumbers

tuna with spring onion and light mayo

falafel, cooked from the night before, with minty yogurt dressing

tomato and pate

quorn deli slices - no where near as fatty as real meat and v quick to do. nice with salad and saladcream.

Houmous and rocket with cucumber and carrot sticks on the side.

Low-fat mayo oops - something - with roasted peppers and/or sundried tomatoes.

Piles of salad - crunchy lettuce, cucumber, sliced tomatoes, and a tiny bit of grated cheese.

Cottage cheese has a lot less fat, great with rocket, cucumber, tomato.

Tuna? Thin sliced smoked salmon with low fat Phiadelphia cheese?

Also love Guacamole in a sarnie but its not very low-fat!

Many thanks everyone - love the idea of ham and mango chutney - yummy.

But my favourite idea is crisp sarnies - they are the invention of god (and I'm not religious).

Love the idea of a crispy lettuce sarnie as well - yummy scrummy.

Many thanks everyone - keep any more suggestions coming, everything is much appreciated.

ready salted crisp and marmite are good in a sarnie
also try marmalade with cheese
for more healthy options, marmite and banana in toasted sandwich is surprisingly good!

HappyBump · 02/12/2009 17:13

Some yummy sarnie suggestions above, you could also use beef, turkey, etc. as fillings. Personally I don't really like deli meat in sandwiches so I usually have cheese, tuna or humus or even just avocado.

However, you could try wraps or pita pockets as an alternative to bread for your sandwiches. Or toast the sandwiches if you have a sandwich toaster, sometimes that makes it a little more interesting.

Or maybe even different types of soup with a roll (so you still get your bread fix)

houmous and avocado
houmous and sprouted beans

Avocado isn't particularly low in fat but it slow release so will keep you going for longer which should stop you from picking later.

any combo of the last 3
carrot & hummous
prawn & guacamole
tuna & tomatoe

Avocado is a good one. I have it mashed up with lemon and black pepper, or sliced with houmous or chicken. Use baby spinach leaves (tougher than lettuce) between the bread and avocado (or any squishy fillings) to stop the bread going soggy.
