Thats about it really

We are having a(nother) family gathering on 27Dec and i have said that i will make a yummy pudding.

we will all eaten our yearly quota of Christmas pudding / Christmas cake etc (that i have also made) in the previouse couple of days.

I also will not have a spare millisecond on Christmas day OR boxing day and not sure about Xmas eve either!

So ideally it needs to be able to be made on 23rd Dec OR be really quick to make on the morening of 27 Dec.

Also we are having a(nother) buffet of cold meat / bread / pickles etc so something that can be put on the table and that people can help themselves to as and when, as opposed to being served at a sit down meal, and eaten immediatly!
Im having a bit of a mind blank.

Ideally i dont want to be in any shop (buying ingrediants) on Xmas eve either!

2 large pavlovas, make on the 23rd. Fill one with strawberries and blueberries and the other with kiwis and apricots.

Pinner35 · 01/12/2009 14:04

How about a trifle.....keeps nicely in the fridge for a few days so easy to do in advance. Cheesecake also keeps well when made in advance.....there's one on the BBC Good Food website which is yummy and v easy to make and stick in the fridge. Will keep thinking

Trifle
Eton Mess
Chocolate mousse
Cheesecake
Lemon tart?

LadyPeterWimsey · 01/12/2009 14:07

I second pavlovas . They always disappear in seconds when I serve them.

If you want a hot pudding, I have had some success with freezing and reheating sticky toffee pudding, and the sauce is pretty easy to whip up.

LadyPeterWimsey · 01/12/2009 14:09

Whoops - just realised, tassisssss, that I've name-changed for a bit - procrastinatingparent here.

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 01/12/2009 14:10

Delias chocolate truffle torte, can be made and frozen, defrosts perfectly.

I'm another one for pavlova, but my favourite is Nigellas raspberry and chocolate pavlova.

nannyl · 01/12/2009 14:45

wow lovely ideas there

pavlova will be perfect, (and [thinks to self] i can serve it on my special extra big Christmas plate ) and it can keep in an air tight contianer for a few days....
(and [thinks to self again]i could make some special xmas ice cream with the yolks)

any idea which book nigellas raspberry and choc pavloval is in (I have nearly all her books, so it will probably be in the 1 havent got!)

Also like the idea of sticky toffee pudding! Thats another of my favourites and i have a fab recipie for that (annabelle karmell lol!) ... and obviously at christmas time calories dont count!!!

Make a huge rice pudding with extra nutmeg on top to make it more Christmassey (sp?). Just heat milk, pour over rice and sugar, top with butter and nutmeg and leave in oven for 2 hours. Big favourite in our house

notamumyetbutoneday · 01/12/2009 16:07

Can't beleive that Stirling isn't on here recommendign Nigella's Anglo italian trifle- she recommended it to me ages ago and it is the yummiest pudding ever which gets requested again and again. Its faff-free as well.

here

StirlingInDaHouse · 01/12/2009 17:25

Yay! Someone liked something I suggested

I agree notamummyyet, it is just gorgeous, I defy anyone to just have one spoonful.

Of course it is quite alcoholic so you would need to do a separate one for the dc - that is where the pavlova will come in handy.

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 01/12/2009 20:13

If you google nigellas chocolate and raspberry pav. you will find it, it will be worth finding.

tassisssss · 01/12/2009 22:33

Hello LPW, thanks for explaining who you were!! Hope you're doing OK. We should bump that old thread for some pre-Christmas suppost, gearing up to crazy season here! xx

Drayford · 01/12/2009 22:45

If you don't mind cheating, buy M&S sweet tart bases and fill them with chocolate ganache (melt good (70%) chocolate and add cream and butter) and top with raspberries or strawberries, or make a cheaty lemon tart by mixing lemon curd with cream and top with grated orange and lemon zest.

nannyl · 02/12/2009 11:17

Just had a thought... if i buy fresh raspberries on 23rd Dec wont they be manky by the 27th?

maybe i could nip into tesco (that i drive past anyway) JUST to get raspberries on 27 dec

You could always use the frozen ones - or a pack of frozen fruits of the forest......

silverwoodhelpdesk · 02/12/2009 15:49

Tarte Tatin. Make two, turn out and freeze. Apple is good, and normal, but I have a great recipe with plums (and a little bit of marzipan where the stone comes out from). Very easy to make. Serve with ice cream, cream or even brandy butter.

mussyhillmum · 03/12/2009 11:41

Delia's sticky toffee / ginger/ chocololate puddings. You can make them in advance and pop them in the freezer. Make the sauce on the day, pour over the puds and pop under the grill. I always make these when I know I'm going to be too sozzled busy to do anything elaborate for pudding.

aseriouslyblondemoment · 03/12/2009 11:48

pannetonne or pain or chocolat puddings
can buy in all the ingredients beforehand ie longlife double cream, eggs, vanilla extract etc
rice pudding made the night before in the slow cooker.
agree with suggestion for delia's choc truffle torte but might be a tad rich for some people
also the packs of frozen raspberries are actually v good not at all squishy!

figrollinthehay · 03/12/2009 12:11

Something hot (apple pie? cook apple in advance and plonk some shop rolled puff pastry on top on the day) and christmas pudding ice cream (make in advance)?

Delia's chocolate bread and butter pudding - very easy/delicious/can make in advance

Delia'a lemon tart (so nice that DH wrecked my relationship with MIL for life by saying it was nicer than hers )
