Nigella Lawson's Ham in Cherry Coke - Please!!`

This Christmas is going to be manic. I'm due to give birth by ELCS the week before (although judging by how painful my pelvis is today, she might be making an early appearance!!) and to help out, my Mum has offered to drive the 3 hours to our house to spend Christmas day with us and cook Christmas lunch for us so that I can just sit on the sofa and feed our new DD. She's bringing my youngests sister and brother too who live at home with her. There will be 5 of us for dinner plus my DS and new DD.

All I have to do is sort out the meat and put it on in the morning else it won't have enough time to cook.

The thing is, it's the first time ever that we will have done Christmas at our house and I want it to be special - and I have my heart set on making Nigella's Ham in Cherry Coke as part of dinner along with a chicken (no-one really likes Turkey) It'll make for great leftovers too for supper.

I don't have the recipe though.

I would buy the book (Feast) but it's been on my Christmas wishlist and I have a feeling SIL has bought it for me. By the time I get my hands on the book, it'll be Christmas Day and far too late to buy the ingredients!

I would borrow the book from the library but getting around is getting quite tough as my pelvis is very sore and the library is right next to the shopping center which makes parking next to impossible. DH works an hours drive away and doesn't have time to go before or after work for me.

I've looked online but I can only find the Ham in Coke recipe and it was the Cherry Coke one I really wanted to try.

I've asked a friend who has the book but he's lent the book to his ex wife and she's now not giving it back!

I asked my sister who has the book but she lives an hour and a half away and keeps forgetting to photocopy the recipe to post it to me.

I'm getting desperate!!

So I thought I would ask you guys. Does anyone have Nigella's Feast who wouldn't mind scanning or typing out the recipe for me? I really want to get the ingredients bought (and possible also a big pan!) before this baby appears!!

I know it's unlikely but I can't think what else to try...

TIA

fishie I was going to serve it hot for lunch and then cold leftovers in the evening for supper.

I guess the pan needs to be just a bit bigger than the ham right?

How do you make the red cabbage?

Cook the ham the day before, but don't do the glaze bit until Christmas Day.

I don't eat meat but DH, DD and the family/friends who were visited all loved it. It desn't taste like cherry coke, but does taste sweet and very moist apparently.

Hulababy · 30/11/2009 22:23

Red cabbage is in my type up of the menu - just before glaze method.

carrieNchild · 30/11/2009 22:25

Thanks Hula. Would you cook it, wrap in foil and put in fridge?

Hulababy · 30/11/2009 22:26

Probably wrap up, leaving rind on until I did glaze.

lilibet · 30/11/2009 22:30

And which is nicer?

GoldenSnitch · 30/11/2009 22:30

Ah yes, found the bit about cabbage - Thanks.

How many is that supposed to serve? We'll only have 5 adults and it will be served alongside the chicken so I don't want to do too much else I'll end up eating it for days!!

Can't afford a ham from the butchers, worried there won't be enough fat on a supermarket

cazzybabs · 01/12/2009 22:17

carrie - i used cheap gammon from Tesco's on the grounds cherry coke was going to give it all the flavour it needed...it worked fine

CantSleepWontSleep · 01/12/2009 22:41

Oh I'm sorry but I am actually crying tears of laughter at your OP.

I'm sure if you'd just put 'anyone got the recipe' we would have come up trumps, but you've gone to so much effort to give details of why you need it and don't have it.

I do hope that it turns out to be a roaring success, and good luck with the arrival of your new dd.

I just didn't want anyone thinking I was being a lazy cow!

Or ending up with a huge thread full of suggestions on how to get the recipe - buy the book/go to the library/borrow from a friend etc - when I've thought about all of those.

It is a bit of an ask to get someone to type out a whole recipe for some stranger on the internet after all!

Thanks cazzy - that's reassuring

ClaireDeLoon · 23/12/2009 21:40

I made this today - was delicious, did the red cabbage and with mashed potatoes, worked really well together. Loads left for cold cuts. Thank you posting the recipe.

wow, this looks fab, I might have to buy Feast if this is not in the Xmas NL I have ordered. And I can use all those disgusting cans of cherry coke I have

hobbgoblin · 22/12/2010 20:04

I now have 2 gammon to do this with - one is going to be part of xmas present for parents (thrifty stylee). So, just how long can I keep it for? I'd like to make tonight ideally and give to them on xmas day...

goodmanners · 22/12/2010 20:10

right i have bought cherry coke in error and dh and i declared it rank but i have an unsmoked gammon an onion and a slow cooker - i refuse to buy fancy crap to faff up a recipe so hit me with the lazy slattern version......

laziest and tastiest the better....

hobbgoblin · 23/12/2010 11:41

Mine was pretty lazy last night. I sampled a bit that fell off as I lifted from the pan and it is scrumptious!

I brought mine to the boil, discarded water, then put in a new pan, covered with cherry coke, added a little water to cover without having to buy a 2nd bottle of cherry coke, added the halved peeled onion (I used 2 in fact) and then left til I went to bed - I think around 2-3 hours later)

Have now covered and put in fridge to oven finish off tomorrow.

My current questions are; what can I do about the fact it rather fell apart on cooking and no longer looks as pretty? Will the fat that lifted off in cooking (about half of the rind) be enough to not need to remove any more with a knie before I bake?

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 23/12/2011 20:27

I had to search for this thread in a panic. My gammon is soaking in readiness! Doing the cherry coke one, fingers crossed :)

Hulababy · 23/12/2011 20:36

I have two hams in the fridge ready to do in cherry coke on Boxing Day :)

I don;t eat meat but family all do. It was 9y DD's choice - she loves it.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 24/12/2011 11:10

Currently cooking in the coke right now, slightly dubious at the smell, a very odd combo! It is for tomorrow and I have to brave Tescos and hope they have cherry jam amongst other things! Kills self

Glad your DD loves it :)

FallingForRosie · 15/12/2018 20:19

Zombie thread I know, however has anyone tried this with the no sugar version of cherry Coke?

I cannot find full fat anywhere, think it may have been discontinued Hmm

Debating sugar free cherry or full fat coke and still do the cherry glaze at the end.
