I've had loads over the years, none of which actually do the job very well. I am determined to finally buy a decent one that actually works properly. Please can i have your recommendations (and ones to avoid, so i don't waste any more money!). Thanks

I have one from Ikea which does the job and isn't too much bother to clean.

I've had an Ikea one in the past but it got left with ex-H and my nearest Ikea is a huge trek away.

I need one that is properly dishwasher safe - the last one i had literally fell apart when we washed it.

I use the back of a large broad bladed knife. No need to wash like a fiddly garlic press.

Slam the heel of your hand down on the flat of the blade with the clove of garlic under it and then chop the crushed bulb liberally.

It is very satisfyingly low tech..... and yes I do need to get out more.

this is mine

zyliss garlic press

and it's great. no need to peel the garlic. (lazy I know). and dishwasher safe. I've had mine for about 8 or 9 years and maybe thinking about replacing it now. but to be fair, it still does the job, just looks a bit tatty.

Big carving knife and chopping motion. I prefer it roughly chopped.

zyliss is the best of a bad lot, really you need to go the splatting option with the big knife and the heel of your hand. a bit of scraping and chopping (made easier with a wee dod of salt crystals) and it's a lovely garlicky paste.

This is what you need:

Not cheap (£34!!) but my hell it's good. I asked for a decent one a while ago and got this for Xmas. At the time I thought it was ridiculous to spend that sort of money on a flippin' garlic press but it's been going strong for years, gets shoved in the dishwasher day after day and is so easy to clean completely as you can pull the crushing part right out and there's nowhere for the garlic to get stuck. Honestly, it's probably the best thing in my kitchen!!
