There will be between 14 and 18 (maybe more) of all ages from 1 to 80odd. Obviously will have a house full of leftovers but not sure I can stretch turkey curry that far. Buffet type spead or some sort of casserole thing? Ideas please

Buffet centring around cold turkey and a large ham with hot duchesse potatoes. Lots of pickles, breads, cheeses etc

Can't go wrong!

geordieminx · 26/11/2009 20:42

Nigella's coke ham.

theminniebauble · 26/11/2009 20:43

Cold turkey, ham and a couple of massive dishes of homemade macaroni cheese- all crispy on top and gooey in the middle. Surround with bread and pickles and let them pick.

Ivykaty44 · 26/11/2009 20:46

get a ham and boil in water or coke, either when cooking puddings if you do them - leave in the water after you have cooked for twelve hours

lots of jkt pots

pleanty of pickle add cold turkey

keep it simple

then three deserts and some ice cream

SoMuchToBits · 26/11/2009 20:46

Cold turkey, plus ham, with pickles, chutneys etc. Then add some nice bread, cheeses, and maybe baked potatoes and some wintery veg dish, e.g. braised red cabbage, and/or coleslaw.

Would it make you all go if I suggest mash with your cold meat buffet?

It's a southern thing apparently! It was met with lots of , when I mentioned it last year, but everyone has that around here! Boxing Day isn't Boxing Day without cold meat and mash!

Ivykaty44 · 26/11/2009 21:10

mlove - I love mash with my cold meat, even better is bubble and squeek with xmas day letover vegtables all thrown in

Thing is if you have 18 people jkts are a doddle as they keep for ages in the oven and you can mash the contents if you like

I do chips on boxing day with cold meat/salad/bread/pate. - How common am I??

Tizzyjacko · 26/11/2009 22:38

Thank you thank you, one and all, jacket spuds is a good idea as knowing my family timing will be fluid. I think the Nigella ham in coke is the way to stretch the turkey.

What about the lone vegetarian......???

SoMuchToBits · 26/11/2009 23:12

Lone vegetarian can have jacket potato, and any veg/salad, and you could add in some vegetarian sausage rolls. Always good in my opinion.

I have a family gathering a few days after Christmas & always do cold left over turkey, hot pigs in blankets, cold ham (Nigellas's ham in coke), a big cheese board with crackers, celery & grapes. Salad, pickles, new potatoes & bread. A trifle for pud, mince pies & Christmas cake. That way there's something for everyone.

I wouldnt stress out on the morning, I would make and freeze now! Lamb tangine, beef bouginion etc. What about a nice poached salmon?

I've never been one for turkey next day its always been traditon to have it 2 days after. Traditonally always salmon boxing day, nice and light.

lilolilmanchester · 29/11/2009 00:35

we always turn our leftovers in to a massive pie: chop up turkey/sausages/potatoes/veg/stuffing/bread sauce - anything really left over. Mix with white sauce in e.g. a lasagne dish, put pastry on the top & bake. Honestly, it's tastier than Christmas Dinner. Will stretch your leftovers further. If you also do a ham or salmon & jacket spuds, that's the main course pretty well sorted with minimal effort (esp if you buy the ready rolled puff pastry sheets).
