What/how much do your DC's eat at breakfast?

My DS (5) only has a bowl of cereal or 2 slices of toast for breakfast and I thought this was normal, but after speaking to some other mums at swimming lessons I wonder if I am under-feeding him as their DC's have both cereal and toast!

This seems to keep him going. He has a fruit snack mid-morning at school, then school dinner at about 1pm-ish.

So what do your kids have?

DS is 2, so not sure how relevant, but he has a massive bowl of readybrek (5 big spoons), plus toast and fruit.

When I was at school I would always have cereal, then the option of toast if I wanted it, which I think is a good way to do it.

my dd (nearly 4) has a bowl of cereal and a banana, usually and then occasionally a piece of toast too. If he seems fine and isn't saying he's still hungry then don't worry.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 26/11/2009 13:01

DS(4) usually has just a bowl of cereal.

DD(21 months) usually has a bowl of cereal, a slice of toast and fruit. In fact she would probably just keep eating whatever I gave her.

My four get the option of cereal and toast in the morning and some will have both, others just cereal or just toast ... depending how they feel.

DS (13mo) has toast and cereal and then either fruit or yoghurt- but he is a pig!

If what you are giving keeps him going then it must be enough

BlueKangerooWonders · 26/11/2009 13:11

VK - it doesn't seem much to me! Perhaps offer something else - I would always add eggs/ bacon/ cheese / any other protein to keep him going.

Mine need more than just cereal, and I like the idea of breakfasting like a king, lunching like whatever it is and dining like a pauper!

ds is 5 and has at least 2 large bowls of cereal and sometimes toast as well. dd is 3 and usually eats a lot less. They're all different, I'm sure your DS would let you know if he is still hungry. You could offer him more and see if he wants it if you are worried?

allaboutme · 26/11/2009 13:15

My 1 yo eats cereal and toast and sometimes more after, my 4 yo will eat some toast (never as much as 2 slices) or nothing, depending on his mood!
I am the same, some days I cant face food until mid morning tbh, other days I can manage a small amount of toast.

ZZZenAgain · 26/11/2009 13:16

At that age, my dd would not have eaten a bowl of cereal and some toast for breakfast.
She would have barely managed a small bowl
Now she is 9 she has a bowl of porridge with 2 kinds of fruit chopped into it and sometimes nuts on top. That doesn't keep her going beyond mid-monring though, she definitely needs a sandwich and fruit then. I think from my (limited) experience, it changes as they get older, at some stage they just are ready for a bigger breakfast.

DC's are 7, 10, 13 & 15
They eat cereal and yoghurt every morning unless we run out of milk then it's toast or eggs if I am feeling generous.
All have 1-2 bowls each.

Seona1973 · 26/11/2009 13:33

dd (6) is offered a smaller bowl of cereal than ds (3) and half the time she still doesnt finish it. They dont get offered toast as I dont have time to faff about with it and all the different toppings they want on it. DD doesnt seem to be a breakfast person but makes up for it at lunch and dinner plus her snacks. (she has a fruity snack at school around 10.15am and then lunch is at 12.10pm)

Thank you all for replying.

DS usually finishes his cereal and never asks for any more except occasional weekends. On the very odd morning he won't finish.

When he was at nursery he would often tell me that he had had both toast and cereal.

I do give him a decent sized bowl of cereal, and when he has weetabix he will state how many he wants - usually 2, sometimes 3 - and the same with toast.

Hmmm, I just asked him if is still hungry after breakfast or if his cereal is enough. His reply "Usually it is enough. Sometimes if I am still hungry after I might have more"!

I guess I'll let him know the option is there for more, but if he does want it he'll have to start getting up earlier as we run on a tight schedule in the mornings!
