Oooh, I love vol-au-vents
But then, I'm a bit of a pastry-aholic
Yum, yum, yum.
Prawn and mayonnaise is best in them!

sheeplikessleep · 24/11/2009 14:36

maybe i'm in the minority - sorry jimmy2!

AMumInScotland · 24/11/2009 14:49

I would happily munch vol-au-vents - I'd think we're far enough post-80s to be allowed them again surely?

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 24/11/2009 14:53

I don't hold with all this fashion business in relation to food.
Are vol-au-vents yummy? Yup. So go for it....

Slubberdegullion · 24/11/2009 14:53

Oh yes, om nom indeed. I would scoff them. If any one dares to give you any jip about them then let them know that 80's food is very 'in' now ackshewerly.

I have made this up to justify my roulade last week but if you say it with enough conviction you will carry it off.

Slubberdegullion · 24/11/2009 14:55

but Kathy, aspic...would you do an aspic?

Could you do an aspic?

I'm not sure I could pull it off tbh

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 24/11/2009 14:59

Well I never have.
But I am starting to think maybe I should try....

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 24/11/2009 15:02

(we could have a MN aspic competition and post photos - they are very visual....)

Iklboo · 24/11/2009 15:04

I love vol-au-vents

Chicken & bacon (in a chicken sauce - campbells condensed soup is great for this)
Cheese & broccoli (in a cheesy sauce)
Cheese & leek (ditto)
Prawn cocktail
Shredded duck in hoisin sauce

For a joke one year my mum did sprout vol-au-vents

sheeplikessleep · 24/11/2009 15:06

we once did an 80s buffet on new years eve - vol-au-vents, cheese and pineapple on sticks, sandwiches etc etc ... it was fab!

BUT, i draw the line at sprout vol-au-vents

Slubberdegullion · 24/11/2009 15:21

Kathy, you're on...but in the new year. I haven't the mental fortitude to consider aspic at this time of the year.

senua · 24/11/2009 15:24

Vol au vent are so yesterday. Why don't you do bouchee a la reine?

sheeplikessleep · 24/11/2009 15:27

i'm salivating at that link senua!

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 24/11/2009 15:51

OK Slubber!
That gives us a month or two to hunt down a suitable jelly mould as well.

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/11/2009 15:55

Slubber would have to fight me off for the vol au vents. Surely prawn in marie rose sauce with chopped parsley on top is the King of vol au vents?

Slubberdegullion · 24/11/2009 16:00

I'd punch you in the face bibbity before I'd let you get the last one.

I'm quite partial to a coronation chicken v-au-v meself.

Kathy, I have a ring mould already. oh yes

slim22 · 25/11/2009 13:06

Only mini ones to serve as canapes.

jimmy2 · 26/11/2009 11:53

Thank you for your feedback. Its really hard as it needs to be a bit posh and ok cold too. I had also thought about puff pastry with tomato and cheese and basil...would this be horrible cold??

Are wraps a good idea?

Vol au vents are my dd's fave snack. She quite often takes a couple to school for break time. It is a shame really because I have to finish the eight that are left out of a packet of 12.
She generally has chicken or prawn and I normally have mushrooms in cream sauce.

ApplesinmyPocket · 02/12/2009 09:49

Vol au vents - one of my favourite nibbles. Anything with a cheese-based filling is yum. Or chicken in sauce, or prawns.

My prediction is they will all go in minutes leaving 'trendier' and 'healthier' options sadly congealing under a drooping fan of wilted lettuce.

Pineapplechunks · 02/12/2009 09:56

Vol au vents = good!

An alternative(or as well) would be mini Yorkshire puddings filled with roast beef and gravy.

My cousin had caterers for her son's christening and they served these, they were fab, very popular.
