My DD is 8.5mths old & is drinking around 16ozs milk a day which is less then the guidelines - how much milk are your baby's drinking?

DD who will turn 10 months in a few days time drinks 21oz of milk a day which is just above the guidelines, she also eats 3 very good meals a day.

I think that so long as your child has a varied diet then it doesn't really matter that they are not having the 'recommended' amount of formula/breastmilk. I think that the nutritionists who thought up these guidelines of 20oz up to 12months old only intended them as guidelines and not gospel to be adhered to whatever the cost.

DS2 is 8 months old and if we're lucky he drinks 16oz a day (that's a very good day). He usually drinks about 14oz but we just make it up with his breakfast (4oz) and fromage frais (2oz). I've decided not to get stressed about milk this time around (I was paranoid with ds1) as ds2 is eating well and has a good varied diet.

Our hv has said that as long as they have 10oz a day then that's absolutely fine and the guidelines are no longer for a pint a day at this stage!

Hope this helps and it sounds like you're dd is doing very well !

Same age & drinks 15-16 oz milk a day + extra dairy products (yogurt, cheese) + the milk that goes into dd's food, eg breakfast. HV says the 15-16 oz is just fine.

That'll be that pesky 0-5 book lying to me again................ Grrrrr

Jasmum, don't know whether this is any help, but dd2 refused milk from 4 months, as soon as she saw the bottle she was hysterical.

One of the leading specialists at leeds hospital told me not to worry as we were weaning her and she was a healthy weight, he just advised to try and get her to eat lots of dairy products, which we have done, she is not nearly 15 months old and still won't touch milk on its own

thanks guys, I feel a lot better now. I saw HV today & she asked what she drank & started me worrying that maybe she wasn't getting enough milk as she doesn't have a pint, but her weight is fine & she has 3 good meals a day aswell as yogs, cheese etc so I refuse to worry anymore about it. I wish these HV's would get their storys straight though!

Thanks everyone, you've answered a question I posted recently (albeit I can't remember if it was on this site) about my own (now 11mth old) son (number 3) who is a reluctant drinker of milk (and water, juice). I still b/f in am but try to get him to drink formula from cup/bottle at other parts of day - he does but very small amounts.

These posts have been reassuring.

My Dd started going off milk at about 7 or 8 months, especially as her food intake increased. She quickly was down to just two bottles a day - one in morning and one at night which is only about 12 oz max. At 13 months she now has just one 6oz cup of formula (she hates cow's milk as a drink) as soon as she wakes up. I make the rest up with yoghurts, cheese, rice pud, etc.

I don't think our dd has ever managed a pint a day. I was always lucky to get more than 100 ml down her at a time and even then only 3 - 4 times a day. She is fit and healthy though, if petite, and eats a variety of foods ( as and when it suits her of course) including cheese, yoghurt and milky cereal.

So long as your dd is putting on weight and otherwise thriving try not to worry too much.

It's been reassuring to read these posts (see the thread I started about dd who's refusing to drink) and find out that others have this trouble. I too have been worrying about the pint a day thing (especially when I was told that a UK pint is 20oz, not 16!) but I guess I should just trust my instinct a bit more.
