Did anyone started their kids on fresh milk before the age of one. I want to try for my 6 month old. He eats well for his age but drinks very little milk.

Tatt, I just had a good conversation with the lady at vitacare... She said that she thought that all the formulas would have vegetable oils in, its not something that has been a problem for people...

Thanks anyway

Bobbybob, I will e-mail neocate and ask them about their oils

dill4 you sounded quite positive the other day about avoiding it, sorry that's not working. Its a bit hot to cover up completely - would a barrier cream help or is your skin too bad to put that on over whatever other stuff you are using? And - sorry for sounding like a parrot - try probiotics in your diet to see if they help repair your gut since allergies seem to start there.

Forgot to mention pepti junior (cow & Gate), prestimil and alimentaum. Can't find a list of ingredients anywhere and they are probably no use but Cow & Gate's phone number is 08457 623 623 and Bristol-myers Squibb for the last two is (020) 8572 7422. Prestimil was withdrawn at one stage.

sazhig, I consciously increased solid intake of ds in a hope that he would start sleeping through but no success. I have started giving him stage 2 milk instead of fresh. He takes no more that 3/4 ouce at a time. He eats four times a day. Do you think is it ok for him. Also has anyone heard of "Nedo" brand of nestle. From what age can this milk be started?

Pomi, starting solids (or increasing them) to make a baby sleep through is a myth, unfortunately perpetuated by many health professionals still. Solids will make very little difference to sleep as they contain less calories than milk (formula or breast) so babies will continue to wake as they will be hungry. Giving too many solids can also make sleep worse as they can be hard for babies to digest, so they get indigestion (sp?) which makes them wake more!

If you are worried about his milk intake I would maybe cut out 1 or 2 of his meals. How much milk does he have over a day?

6 months is supposed to be the starting point for giving solids so giving 4 meals a day at this age does (and this is only my oninion) seem a bit too much, especially as it seems to have affected his milk intake. Solids are really only for tasters until they get nearer 1 year old & it will do not harm at all to reduce solids.

I do not know of the Nedo brand of milk you asked about but found a reference to "nido" powdered whole milk (are you in the uk/us?) which is basically powdered milk and is therefore not suitable for babies. Only breast milk or formula specifically designed for babies (it should say so on the packet) should be given until at least 1 year. Anything else will not have the right balance of nutrients, vitamins etc.

Ask away if you want any more help/advice

pomi have you tried changing the brand of milk/ increasing the size of the hole in their teat? Maybe he doesn't like the taste of that brand?

dill4 after another mumsnetter mentioned efamil elsewhere I looked at the ingredients. They are very specific about what oils they use (see below). If you aren't equally allergic to all oils maybe switching brands might reduce the problem.

"non fat milk, pre-gelatinised starch, lactose, palm olein oil, malto-dextrin, coconut oil, soy oil, high oleic sunflower oil, lecithin concentrate"
