What can I give my 7month old for breakfast? Does Weetabix contain too much salt or is it ok? Any hints would be great. Thanks.

From 6 months my boy has been eating Readybrek made with full cream milk with banana mashed through it and seems to love it. We have just switched to using soya milk because of his skin and it gets gobbled just the same. I'm sure my HV said that Weetabix was also good mushed up with warm milk. Haven't tried anything else since the porridge was such a hit (other fruits through just as pleasing - rhubarb, apple etc).

My son loves any of the Baby Organix cereals, favourite being the banana porridge, he has been having these since about 5 months and still having them every morning at 9 months.

Our son also likes the Boots Organic fruit with porridge and fruit with muesli dry cereals, plus the Hipp Organic muesli breakfast.
I think Weetabix is fine, ours has never taken to it.

Bee, my sons favourite was definitely the baby organix packet cereal. Unfortunately he never took to Weetabix, other child loved Ready Brek, and had it EVERY morning for years!

You could also try scrambled eggs for a change. My 10 month old loves Weetabix either mixed with fruit or on its own. I tried porridge once but she hated it, I will try it again though, perhaps nearer to winter.

Trouble is with these cereals for babies is that they are all so expensive! Why bother paying over the odds for baby cereals when most adult cereals will do? Most adult cereals have reduced sugar now anyway so they're just as good!

Anyone tried museli?

I tried scrambled eggs for a change a few months back when my son was about a year and it was a disaster, he hated it and it was thrown everywhere - took me ages to clear up horrible little bits of egg all over the place. The trouble with scrambled egg is it gets cold very quickly and turns to rubber (well when I cook it it does!)
Have you tried Shreddies - they went down well for ages, mixed up with warm milk.
I agree the Baby Organix banana porridge was lovely, but so expensive.

Luckily our daughter will eat tesco value weetabix. She loves it with banana and warm milk. I tried cornflakes but they ended up all over the place. She likes toast and but only eats marmite on toast at the childminders.

Thank you to everyone for good tips, will try the weetabix now and think she will love it with fruit.

You all mention weetabix. Do you give it to your little ones with formula or regular milk? My daughter is only 8.5 mths old and I'm wanting to introduce regular foods to her.

Jodee · 11/08/2001 22:00

I gave my ds full-fat yoghurts from 6 months. Cow's milk is OK for mixing foods or in cooking from 6 months onwards (but not as a main drink until one year old). I was definitely using full fat cow's milk to make up my son's Weetabix when he was 8 months old.

Just a word of caution about giving adult cereals to babies - it's not just the sugar you should be worried about but the added salt, many breakfast cereals have high sodium levels and are therefore unsuitable for babies.

Joe · 13/08/2001 06:22

I give my son ready brek with full fat milk, it says on the packet that it is ok for babies.

Mummy · 20/08/2001 21:54

thanks, for mailing me back re: milk on breakfast cereals, but she didn't like it so we are back on baby cereals for now.
