At what age can you give a 2 year old cola or is it a big no no?

God I love diet coke

I have a self imposed ban however because I don't want my 2yo DD thinking it is normal to drink it like water, and I'm BFing DS

Once my maternity leave is over I shall have a cheeky bottle next to my computer at work. Can't work without that phosphoric acid hit, oh no

halfcut · 25/10/2009 15:22

Diet coke is vile...full fat coke all the way

Jennylee · 25/10/2009 15:58

I was incredulous a few month ago when I was at my cousins house and all the big kids were having coke as a treat and she asked does your dd like coke? I laughed and said no she doesn't. I was then gobsmacked, when cousin gave her a sip out of her glass and said hey you said she doesn't like it but she does. My dd was 11 month old. I thought cousin was kidding around, she was being serious. We have clashes like this, she wonders why I am so concerned with my kids teeth when they are baby teeth so are going to fall out anyway. I'm too nice to point out that her kids came to this country with terrible black teeth, some of them had dissolving back teeth one got an abcess wich needed treatment, but am too polite as in her country being able to afford coke was a status symbol and nicer than the tap water.sorry bit of a highjack there

think 5 is a reasonable age if out in restaurants or at partys or visiting people. But I still get annoyed if people give it to or buy it for my 10 year old

Claire236 · 25/10/2009 18:43

MrsBadger - If you'd read mine & sherbys posts properly you would have seen that our point was that no fizzy drink is suitable for a 2 year old & we couldn't understand why some posters were saying they wouldn't give coke but they would give lemonade.

ImSoNotTelling · 25/10/2009 18:54

Oh I love coke. Love it.

DD has never asked for any she seems to sense that the answer will be a flat no.

I am aware however that this won't last and if it's in the house sooner or later...

Totallyfloaty35 · 25/10/2009 19:02

DD3 has just turned 3 and asks for cola cola if im drinking it,i usually give her juice with sparkling water, its got bubbles so she is fooled. She did however have a sip of her older sisters coke recently, she did like it but knows its for big girls dd1and 2 told her this so they dont have to share any (they get it rarely and they are 14 and 12)

I went on a cruise a couple of years ago and saw an American woman give her toddler coke in a baby bottle. I will freely admit, I was somewhat judgey about that.

On the same cruise (classy) I saw people add several sachets of Sweet 'n' Low to their Diet Coke, as if it weren't revolting enough.

However, Coke isn't too bad in terms of nasties, really: the secret recipe consists of things like lemon, cinnamon and neroli oils. It's the sugar and the caffeine that's the killer.

itchyandscratchy · 25/10/2009 19:08

@ what trellism said

was it a Willy Wonka cruise?
That is minging!

This thread is making me crave ice-cold fat Coke.

thatsnotmymonster · 25/10/2009 19:31

I have similar philosophy to tribeleader with my 3 dc.

My 4.5yo has been allowed to choose coke or other fizzy drink when we eat out since he was about 3.5yo. Though he doesn't always have it on those occasions, sometimes he chooses apple juice etc. We rarely have fizzy drinks in the house.

My 3yo dd only likes water to drink- she is free to choose any drink she likes and she always chooses water.

My 18mo dd won't drink water- only juice!

They also are allowed fun size choc bars or similar everyday.

I have never noticed sugar highs, they are all very good at self regulating and the 2 older ones have a very good understanding of what is healthy/not so healthy.

DS will often say that he is going to have some healthy fruit as he hasn't had much today etc.

My mum gave DS a kitkat this afternoon and he ate half then gave the rest to me. He then ate a huge dinner of fish pie and carrot and swede mash and left half of his Aero mousse as he was 'full up'.

not really sure what I am rambling about...but this philosophy is working for us atm

I thought the idea of 'sugar highs' had been discredited as a myth.

Claire236 · 26/10/2009 07:48

I thought it was the additives that caused the high rather than the sugar.

ImSoNotTelling · 26/10/2009 08:05

Personally I'd rather have full fat coke than something with sweeteners in. At least sugar is natural.
