Im starting to think Im going mad.

On saturday I got some salmon out of the freezer to defrost. i added some teriyaki marinade and left it on the side convered in cling film. When I wentto put it in the fridge when i thought it had defrosted, there were white things in the teriyaki marinade. To be honest i didnt look too carefully at what they were i screamed and threw it in the bin.

Today ive got some lentil and bacon (honmemade then frozen) soup out of the freezer for lunch and now it seems to have very very very tiny little black bits in it? I know they aren't burnt bits or anyhting like that as the soup was all fine before I froze it.

What on earth is going on? Am I doing something wrong with regard to freezing deforsting? Someone please help before I never est anyhting ever again (although as I need to lose half a stone that may be no bad thing...)

the fish could have had worms in it but according to the food standards agency freezing would have killed them and once cooked they would be safe to eat - yum!!

Will eating fish with worms in it make me ill?

When fish is cooked thoroughly, so it's steaming hot all the way through, any worms in the fish will be killed and it will be fine to eat. Eating fish containing a dead worm shouldn't do you any harm. Eating fish containing live worms can cause inflammation in the stomach or the gut and make you ill.

Freezing raw fish also kills any worms. If a shop or restaurant buys fish to be eaten raw or almost raw, for example, sushi or raw herring, it must have been frozen at minus 20°C for at least 24 hours

Just had a (rare) steak sandwich. It was lovely - and no maggotty bits either .

Can't believe that they were maggots if you froze in date etc. I am sure there is a very simple explanation.

Black bits - herbs? pepper?

White bits - coold they be sinews/ bones / fat??Or oil / butter

scaryclaireyboo · 12/10/2009 15:28

Or could it have been salt crystals from the teriyaki?

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2009 15:31

Like the steak conversation. Been talking about blue steaks at work today, I said to a well-done loving colleague that the best bit about rare steak is dipping chips into the blood. Yes, that is a partially rotted dead cow I am talking about, Deadflesh .

Guimauve · 12/10/2009 15:35

Ooh, yum, chips in steaky, bloody, juices!

I'll eat your lentil soup OP. If it doesn't kill you....A peck of dirt before you die...etc etc

Guimauve · 12/10/2009 15:39

Flour weevils are teeny weeny, btw. Nigh on impossible to spot if in dark coloured soup and not moving!

I believe that popping your bags of flour in the freezer for 24 hours after you buy it will prevent weevil probs, if you're worried.

Thank you Seona- it is reassuring to know that if they were worrms in the salmon ans I had cooked the salmon, Iprobably would have been fine. Note that I said 'reassuring' rather than 'appetising'...

Is fish and worms a common thing? Does everyone know about this except me? Where do they come from? How do you prevent them?

Sorry for all the questions but Im feeling very paranoid about food safety now. Ive just been on the food safety website which was utterly useless, so Im turning to you lovely people (certain company excepted) for advice.

They could be darkened lentil skins, you know, looking at it again.

If it smells okay, it probably is!

LadyoftheBathtub · 12/10/2009 15:47

I don't think you're going mad. It may not make sense to be horrified by bug/worm-like things in food but disgust is a really strong feeling and does put you off, you can't just decide not to feel it. I once found a maggot inside a fresh

mumof2000 · 12/10/2009 16:04

could it have been ,frost bite on the salon ? that can look most odd ....ot sure about the black bits , poss frozen herbs would look darker if wet ?

loving the steak comments ( snigger snigger ...)

i love bit of fillet ...med...lots of garlic butter ...soaked up with home made chips ...yummm....

got roast chick tonight ....not quite the same ...
