Right!

We know you are all awful mothers who never sterilise. so how many of you used a microwave to heat bottles?

Anyone ever encounter the dreaded "hot spots"??

(Its all right you can tell me)

Always used a microwater with dd1 and dd2 and NEVER had a problem with hot spots

PamT · 24/05/2003 18:01

I used the microwave for no 3 but never warmed bottles up for the first two this way. Surely if you let the bottle stand for a while afterwards and give it a good shake you won't have any problems. I always sterilised up to 12 months though (cold water milton system).

hmb · 24/05/2003 18:04

I used them for both of mine. As long as you remeber to give them a good shake there should be no problem. And after a while both of mine would take the milk straight from the 'fridge.

Hughsie · 24/05/2003 18:37

Always used them and no problems

janh · 24/05/2003 19:00

I used to use it with Playtex disposable bottles so didn't heat for long (in case the plastic melted/burst!), just enough to take the chill off, and after a shake it was easy to feel through the bag how warm the milk was. No hot spots!

morocco · 24/05/2003 19:02

used to warm my own ovaltine and never got a hotspot - does that count?

Gilli · 24/05/2003 19:08

Used the microwave to warm bottles for all 4 once I stopped B/feeding without problems. It's a godsend IMO, when someone is yelling in the night(usually DH!) When dd4 came along 7 years after No3 I discovered microwavable sterilisers and never looked back....

codswallop · 24/05/2003 19:13

IMO all this proves that there is so much "extra" work given too us by means of advice from health professionals!

Yep, Me too.
Have used the microwave for warming milk since DS1 was about 4 weeks old, and always with DS2, when I realised how much time I was wasting warming it in boiling water, it takes bloody ages!

Lindy · 24/05/2003 20:52

Horrible mother admission - never bothered to warm milk, too much hassle, surely it's easier if they can drink it cold or room temperature?

Ghosty · 24/05/2003 20:58

Always used microwave ... 50 seconds for milk that has been in fridge ... 30 seconds of room temp milk ...
If you give it a good shake then there won't be any hot spots surely ....

Melly · 24/05/2003 21:48

Have used microwave for dd and ds and not had a problem.

lisaj · 25/05/2003 08:24

Followed all the advice to the letter with ds, so definitely didn't use the microwave. When dd came along, did everything completely differently, including warming up all her bottles in the microwave and all the other things that I would have been horrified at doing with ds!!

EJsMum · 25/05/2003 08:46

Used to sit dd's bottle in hot water for 1st 4 months, but now I use m'wave all the time (40 secs for fridge feed).
So long as you're sensible shake it and don't nuke it you shouldn't encounter any probs with hotspots.

DebL · 25/05/2003 12:14

EJ's mum - it took 4 months to warm up a bottle in hot water....no wonder you now use a microwave....

WideWebWitch · 25/05/2003 12:19

With ds I didn't dare use the microwave as I'd read about how dangerous etc. it was. I now think, crikey, it really can't be that dangerous as long as you give the bottle a good shake before giving it to a baby. So I'll certainly be using the microwave without hesitation next time, I can't really believe that I used the very poxy bottle warmer we had - it took ages to heat a bottle and so we'd put up with horrific screaming until it pinged.

GeorginaA · 25/05/2003 13:20

I'm with Lindy. I breastfed for the first 8 months then ds went cold turkey on me. Switched to formula but thought to myself "if you're going to have formula you can damn well have it straight out from the fridge. Let's see how quickly you go back to nice cosy comforting breast!" He didn't. But it did save an awful lot of hassle, and it was nice and easy to switch him to cold cows milk at 1 year

easy · 25/05/2003 13:42

I always used the microwave to warm formula, from day 1.
I can't understand how you get hotspots in a shaken liquid, defies the laws of physics IMO

SamboM · 25/05/2003 14:03

Always use the microwave. Never had a hotspot.
