WHY is it considered rude to eat in the street?

Following on from another thread... I've never understood the thinking behind this (in fact, I'd never heard it at all until I was in my twenties).

Is it a middle class thing? Is it because street food is considered to be the preserve of the poor (I know this is the case in some developing countries)?

I can understand why it's inconsiderate to eat strong-smelling foods in enclosed spaces, but other than that I'm bemused by this one.

I'm passionate about steakbakes Dp and pot noodles

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2009 22:10

Oh no pw! The worst usage...

daftpunk · 02/10/2009 22:10

lol halfcut..

you need a decent meal in you..

i eat with my eyes...

piscesmoon · 02/10/2009 22:13

It is very offputting. I recently came across a whole lot of school children (grammar school)and they were all eating or drinking. For the first time I thought that my old school were right for having an absolute ban on it in uniform.

policywonk · 02/10/2009 22:15

Aw, why does that qualify for the sad face?

indigestion

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2009 22:19

I thought better of you.

Dunno why it riles me as much as it does. An inverted snobbery thing

hf128219 · 02/10/2009 22:19

The main question I have is why do people worry about these things?

Ponders · 02/10/2009 22:21

well quite, hf.

There are many worse things that people can do in the street, most of them in contact with others...

policywonk · 02/10/2009 22:22

FM, I suspect you're thinking that I use it against 'chavs' (sorry, hate that word), whereas in fact I tend to use it against the filthy rich (or those who brag about being filthy rich).

Because you dont want lots of people getting indigestion on the street - it doesn't look good when out shopping or boots

halfcut · 02/10/2009 22:26

Is it ok to suck a rennie for indigestion in the street ?

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2009 22:27

No. I wouldn't have you down as a 'chav' basher at all. I do know what you mean, but I still don't like it, sorry.

But now I feel I'm being horrible. So I shall stop

policywonk · 02/10/2009 22:28

OK, fair enough

halfcut, are you and dp sitting on the sofa next to each other with your laptops?

OP posts:
Ivykaty44 · 02/10/2009 22:28

No it is ine to suck rennie in the street as long as she doesn't mind

halfcut · 02/10/2009 22:30

No PW ??????

policywonk · 02/10/2009 22:36

Sorry , thought you said you were DP's no. 2, which I took to mean 'other half'

I'll get my coat...

policywonk · 02/10/2009 22:42

durr. Sorry

Thinking about it, I'm sure dp has said that if she caught her DH posting on here, she'd leave him (or something like that)

Ignore me, I have an over-active imagination.

A abn on eating in uniform would be great for a diet - just keep the uniform on at all times.

MummyTheQueenOfDarkness · 02/10/2009 23:10

when i was teenager there was no greater pleasure than eating fish and chips out of the paper on the way home from wherever we had been.So i must of been really common.

SolidGoldBrass · 03/10/2009 10:17

It's another example of whining twats being unable to mind their own business, really, isn;t it? 'Waaah, I don;t like to see other people eating on the street, it upsets my delicate sensibilities...'
Well stay indoors then. You don't own the street and other people are under no obligation to give a toss about your opinions.

noddyholder · 03/10/2009 16:08

It is working class social climbers who impose these ridiculous social rules!'Real'people of any class couldn't give 2 hoots nwhat others eat and where! It is the sort of thing that would mortify Hyacinth Bouquet
