Have you got a rice cooker? I need help.

I just bought a rice cooker. Unfortunately I went for the cheap, Japanese, unbranded one and the instructions fail to tell me

(a) how much rice to put in
(b) how much water to put in, and
(c) how long to cook it for.

It does say "measure rice and water and place evenly into the rice bowl(see Rice cooking chart)" but there is no rice cooking chart.

It also says "When the cooking is completed wait 20 minutes for the rice to finish cooking" and I'm not quite sure what they mean.

Anyone?

Lol at that last instruction. I don't know how to use a rice cooker but it is nice to see your name around again.

Rice cooker - does it come with a cup? I cook a cup (mine is marked 160ml) for two grownups, and for each cup you put in two cups of water, or if you are an expert like me you put in enough water to come about an inch above the rice. I assume it's an automatic thing that will stop when the rice is done? Then I assume that means you should wait 20 mins before eating it. If it's not automatic than throw it away and cook your rice on the stove. Measure as before, bring it to boil, turn it down to lowest heat, wait 15 minutes, switch off, wait 10 mins. Eat.

Summary for rice cooker: 1 cup rice to 2 cup water, press button, wait, eat.

how long do you wash your rice for...i've been using basmati and it takes ages to get the starch off. I put the rice into a sieve and over a slightly bigger bowl and run the tap for about 30 mins or more. The rice was sains own brand - can anyone recommend a cheapy? oh and i too swear by the rice cooker

slng · 23/09/2009 08:15

I don't like basmati rice. I prefer my rice a bit sticky. I never bother washing it much, only a rinse (and use the rinsing water to water my coriander - waste not want not). I buy broken Thai jasmin rice, 10kg for about 9-10 pounds (maybe more these days. Used to be 7 pounds! But I'm quite happy to pay more because it's so nice.) from Chinese supermarkets. We get through them ...

My rice cooker is rubbish. I cook much better rice on the stove. But I use it when I can't be around to switch things off.

Different types of rice will need a different volume of water to cook effectively

Our website has more detailed guidelines on cooking different rices, including japanese, brown, jasmine and basmati: www.cookjapan.co.uk/article/cooking_rice

One crucial thing is to make sure you wash the rice properly and then leave it to steam for 10-minutes at the end before opening the rice cooker.

If you are interested in a new rice cooker we specialise in japanese rice cookers that can also be used as a slow cooker, steamer and to make things like porridge, soup and risotto

Hope this information is helpful
Thanks
