I chop a lot more onions than I do heads.

Besides it's a Chinese design, albeit made by Japanese craftsmen with centuries of experience from making knives for chopping heads.

ooo podrick - I got the chef'n veggie chop recently. it felt like a bit of a risk...was I going to actually use it? but it's brilliant. there's something about the design - and crucially the lack of a plug - that makes you so much more inclined to get it out and use it. It's so clean - by which I mean no fiddly bits. and a good size - small enough to be small. but big enought to do a decent quantity. you quickly rinse/wipe the lid and the rest (which comprises only the bowl and the blades) goes in teh dish washer. dds like using it. the other day I chopped 5 or 6 shallots finely and perfectly with no tears or smelly hands in a minute. and no faffing about getting something big and bulky out and plugging it in. I'm contemplating putting in a mass order for Christmas presents.

OMG! cyteen that slap chop ad is brilliant! I just watched it all the way through with my jaw on the ground - not at the gadget (whihc looks pretty good) but at the un-turn-off-ability of the ad.

Sabatier devalued their brand quite some time ago.

Some of the high end knives are gorgeous works of art.

Take a look at some of these:

If you want good knives, these are better than anything sold in the UK for the money:

well luckilyy I am 104 so that is ok.
presume you cook every meal then

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 14:35

Well I don't eat raw food, so I'm not sure what else I would do

NoahFence · 07/09/2009 14:36

you cook every meal all day
the bloke on " come dine" last week kept hsi saumrai sword knife in a BOx fgs

obviousyl he was " passionate ( grimace) abotu cooking"

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 14:39

good for him. We keep ours on top of the microwave, it's too sharp to keep in a drawer.

millenniumfalcon · 07/09/2009 14:40

pmsl @"passionate about" i can't stand that phrase. and yes ime male cooks definitely fetishise knives. "devalued" it may be but my sabatier chops things perfectly well thanks

Lilymaid · 07/09/2009 14:42

I have used this knife for years and it is really good at chopping up onions etc - and it is extremely cheap!

SomeGuy · 07/09/2009 14:43

It depends which one you buy. They sell 'Judge Sabatier' knives for about £3 each, which are rubbish.

millenniumfalcon · 07/09/2009 14:53

i find small knives much harder to use lily - i noticed someone using one on a cookery programme the other day and it looked painful. i usually chop with the point of the knife resting on the board and you can't do that with small knives, and usually the handle isn't raised up enough from the edge of the blade either.

Podrick · 07/09/2009 18:47

The samurai blades just freak me out tbh

I know you blade lovers are on to a winner about lack of washing up and gadget storing space, but I do bulk cook and freeze style cooking and I HATE chopping loads of onions and I don't like chopping peppers much more let alons finely chopping carrots. BLURGHHH!!!!

I think this is like being a doctor when you make the choice between medicine and surgery. You knife gurus are the surgeons. Born aND NOT MADE so I cannot be converted although of course I do see great wisdom in what you say.

Me and hatwoman are the medicine folk though so it needs to be a gadget
