Non-boring muesli??

jamandjerusalem · 01/09/2009 07:49

I am so bored of breakfast! But I know I need to be eating whole grains etc blah blah.

Can anyone recommend an exciting muesli? But preferably one that doesn't require re-mortgaging?

Have you got one of those shops with stuff in big tubs that you can mix and match? There was one where I used to live and I loved making my own 'exciting' muesli.

BonsoirAnna · 01/09/2009 08:04

The market for muesli is very dynamic at present in the UK and there is lots of delicious muesli around. I do agree that it is quite expensive - but I think that is a function of the expensive ingredients they use in high quality muesli.

When I last looked in Waitrose there was lots of choice.

jamandjerusalem · 01/09/2009 08:20

Ooh, thanks both. I'll investigate. And maybe treat myself.

Any other recommendations?

I make my own muesli :

Mix about 4 cups wholegrain oats, 1/2 cup each of oatbran or wheatbran, coconut, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, chopped nuts. Mix in a large roasting dish.

Mix together 1/4cup brown sugar, 1/4c honey, 1/4c oil, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1tsp vanilla. Microwave until the honey is liquid and mix well. Tip into roasting dish and mix well.

Bake at 150C for about an hour, mixing every 20 mins or so. When cooled, add chopped dried fruit.

Cheap, easy and you can adjust ingredients and quantities to suit.

Dorset Cereal is delicious - I justify the cost by calculating it costs about 40p per breakfast

piprabbit · 01/09/2009 11:04

I've just discovered Dorset Cereals (at Tesco among other places) and love their interesting cereals....

piprabbit · 01/09/2009 11:05

Hi MissiBoot - glad it's not only me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2009 11:10

I make my own - but an uncooked version. Zacharys sounds lovely

I empty a big bag of oats into a tub. Mix in a whole load of sultanas, other dried fruit, choc chips, nuts, seeds, grape nuts, cereal that needs using up. basically whatever I feel like. Christmas I do theme it with cranberries and cinnamon

ZippysMum · 01/09/2009 11:19

Dorset Cereals Fruit and fibre (they do 2 sorts) is also lovely.

I think I went through an unhealthy obessession with Dorset Cereals - I loved the berries and cherries but have now gone back to the less indulgent high fibre one - you do get jumbo raisins with it though!

BrigitBigKnickers · 01/09/2009 13:21

The Dorset mueslis are lovely. I buy the Blue box one (lots of fruit and nuts.) It's soooo much nicer than any others I've tried and no horrid dusty bits at the bottom of the box like you always find in Alpen

jamandjerusalem · 01/09/2009 14:31

Fantastic, I might give Dorset cereals a go then... I had thought them a bit pricey but maybe it's worth it to actually eat a relatively healthy breakfast. Mmm.... Such lovely packaging too

Make your own muesli

badgermonkey · 01/09/2009 14:52

I like the Dorset ones too and find them pretty good value for money really, because they're so 'dense' you don't eat as much, so a box lasts me a long time. But I don't have massive bowls of cereal in general. Tesco Finest is good too, and a fair bit cheaper. Jordans do one with some nice tropical fruit bits in.

arabicabean · 01/09/2009 16:09

I think that the nicest one I have ever eaten is "Lizi's Organic Granola" from Waitrose. Even my toddler eats this!
Has anyone else tried it?

CultureMix · 01/09/2009 16:51

Best muesli ever is the one from Lidl, labelled 'Goody' Special Fruit and Nut. It is packed with nuts - packaging says 50% fruit nut & seeds and I believe it, unlike other mueslis where you cheer if you do find one lonely nut. So many nuts you might consider stretching it out with plain rolled oats. Costs £1.50 for a 750g bag which is a bargain considering the ingredients, and occasionally goes on sale at £1 (stock up!).

Can you tell I like nuts in my muesli . I sometimes have it with a few spoonfuls of plain yogurt and some milk, it's a bit like the bircher muesli they have in Europe which I love but has to be prepared overnight.

minervaitalica · 01/09/2009 16:59

Make your own! then you can choose your favs in terms of dried fruits and nuts or choc chips... And oats are so cheap that it will work out a lot cheaper than Dorset stuff. If you need extra "help" you can also add some linseed to it.

If you then grate some fresh apple and natural yog in it it will be even nicer... Yum

MmeLindt · 01/09/2009 17:03

MyMuesli.com is fab, if a bit expensive.

I treat myself occasionally. Extremely yummy.

jamandjerusalem · 01/09/2009 18:01

Cor, so much choice on that Muddy Cook site, ColonelCupcake. I might give the kids granola a whirl - it's nice to find something that sounds delicious without a shed-load of sugar.

I'll check out the other recommendations too, especially the Lidl one as it's such good value and the Waitrose ones. Ooh, and your lovely apple/yog suggestion too, minervaitalica!

Thanks all, I'm looking forward to a much lovelier breakfast now

Lidl do a really nice one in a blue packet with lots of nuts and bits of dried fruit. Only £1.49 for a big bag. Could alternate it with dorest ones.

Picante · 01/09/2009 18:53

Colonelcupcake Damn you!! I've just spend 11 quid on my own muesli... I'm so excited!!!

milkmoustache · 01/09/2009 18:56

I am also a Dorset devotee, but try to stretch it out by adding extra fruit - sliced banana, stewed apple/blackberries, grated apple/pear...

JulesJules · 01/09/2009 19:11

Oh God, muesli porn on Muddy Cook! I'm dribbling over the thought of making up my own mix, pomegranates...cinnamon...pear pieces... macadamian nuts...

And I thought buying Dorset cereals was a bit extravagant...

Perhaps I could get some for DH's birthday

janeite · 01/09/2009 19:14

Dorset cereals muesli, natural yoghurt and frozen raspberries that have defrosted a bit is a breakfast made in Heaven.
