I have two leg joints in my freezer... need to know which one to use!

Any help much appreciated, TIA.

Come on you slatterns there must be a domestic goddess among you. I need to know!! At this rate I'll be having to google the answer!

What are the weights of the joints and are they whole leg or half leg (if half leg, which end)?

TheBolter · 26/08/2009 18:28

Hallelujah!

Thanks Lilymaid! The joints are both half legs. both about 1.4kg. The 'bonier', lower leg is slightly over 1.4, the upper, meatier part just below.

Leith's Cookery Bible says:

"Roast leg of lamb - 1.8kg/4lb for 4-5people; 2.7kg/6llb for 7-8 people"

Don't know why it doesn't mention for 6!

So I would err on the side of caution and go for a 6lb leg. I'm with Nigella in the 'never knowingly under-catered' department.

Sorry, I'm supposed to be bathing kids and didn't read OP properly! I would do both and assume there will be some nice left overs the day after.

Lilymaid · 26/08/2009 18:37

I would go for the fillet end, even though it is slightly lighter in weight as there will be far more meat on it.
It should stretch to six portions provided that you aren't enormous meat eaters - but there will be no left overs.
I'd serve this with a big pot of pommes boulangeres (and if it involved my DSs yorkshires as well!) to eak it out.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 26/08/2009 18:53

If you're entertaining I'd think you might be embarrassed by the apparently small amount and lack of leftovers (or is it just my family that troughs into meat?)

If it's just yourselves, you could probably eke out the fleshy end.

(I'd like to see the 'lamb' that has a 2.7kg leg!)

IotasCat · 26/08/2009 19:05

I would do both pieces

TheBolter · 26/08/2009 19:19

OurLady.

Not embarrassed, just want to make sure there's enough to go round!

Thanks for your help guys!

Yes OurLady, it would be two legs...

YouCantTeuchThis · 04/08/2010 09:33

Ha! Just came across this trying to confirm cooking time for a 2.9k leg of lamb (bone-in)...

It was a big lamb right enough.

So am I giving it 50mins per kilo???

MelonKim · 29/03/2018 10:52

Am I going for 2kg. I know ancient thread

kateandme · 29/03/2018 11:09

haha melonkim I had no idea it was ancient.i was going to add as if this was now!
but id always say.bigger the better.and bigger still.becasue when is leftover lamb to chew on bad!
plus bones in lamb joint always weigh more than you think so meat is minimised hugely.so when picking up at the supermarket don't just go for weight.feel the bad boy make sure it is meat not just bone.
