Red wine recommendations needed

I want to get my dad a really nice bottle of red wine as a present but don't drink it myself so I'm after some recommendations. Preferably available from supermarket or online if I don't have to by a case of it. Budget >£35. Thanks!

that's a lot for a bottle of red. I'm afraid your best bet is therefore to go down to a specialist wine shop - Oddbins or similar and get them to advise you. it would help if you know what kind of red wine your dad likes? does he normally drink new world (SA, Australia, etc) wine or old world (French, italian, Spanish). Does he prefer heavier wines like Cabernet Sauvignons or lighter wines? A wine shop would be able to help you better as your budget is generous.

I love Chateau Musar from the Lebanon.

I always think Chateau Musar tastes like musty old books!

If he likes New World wine then Penfolds Grange is lovely (Australian) as is Opus One from California.

Penfolds grange is over £100 a bottle if your budget streches that far.

Waitrose direct do a nice 2002 Margaux gift boxed at £55

I would however reccommend a visit to an independant wine merchants (not majestic, oddbins etc) as you'll get some great advise and a lovely wine. The one in my home town is fantasic and have never steered me wrong yet - even matching food with wine for my dinner parties very successfully.
