I need ideas for 5 children and 6 (possibly 7) adults..........

FAQtothefuture · 25/07/2009 00:19

for Monday night.

at least 2 of the children are big eaters (my oldest DS's eat more than me on a regular basis ), I'm not sure how big eaters SIL's DD's are, but probably about average from what I can remember.

It needs to be

simple
cheap(ish) (prepared to spend a little bit more than I would on a usual family meal - but not ott)
and meat based (so veggie curry or lentil stew are out .

DH is telling me not to worry and just "rustle up one of my fabulous meals just in larger quantities". I'm pretending not to panic but I am a little. I know that none of them are going to be that bothered really - they're the most lovely IL's you could ever ask for. But I want to make a good impresion none the less .

I was thinking a roast chicken - but the meat that FIL probably eats the most of back in Zimbabwe is.........chicken so I want something a bit different.

Please give me some ideas and tell me to stop fretting

sorry just assumed that you'd know by now that I have black in-laws, and that a recipe with the word "ghetto" in it may cause quite the laughs that it may between you and I (even thought the ghetto in question is as you described).

i call it venetian chicken as it happens, but if you're looking for it online or in the book it helps to know the full title, that's all. it's a really nice meal, and not too expensive, you shoudl try it.

FAQtothefuture · 26/07/2009 20:41

well yes - but ime people that like meals often ask for the recipe......and if I've printed it off or are going to direct them to the website........

then it woudl be the cause of some amusement rather than offence, surely to god?

Northernlurker · 26/07/2009 21:08

Oh dear - this thread seems to have followed a somewhat foul tack.

I'll get my coat

Northernlurker · 26/07/2009 21:08

Oh dear lord! That should obviously be 'fowl'

I really will get my coat

FAQtothefuture · 26/07/2009 21:12

I think somewhat the opposite. We are talking here about a person who will only really have heard "ghetto" in relationship to the black ghettos in America. Ghetto/slum - the meaning will almost certainly be the same to him.

but that IS where the recipe is from, it's a recipe from the jewish ghetto. (and i think you'll find the term was coined quite some time in advance of america even existing).
if you're in rome near the synagogue, the area you're in is called ghetto, the cafes and restaurants are called ristorante ghetto etc and what's more they're serving chicken and pasta. i don't really get the big woop here, tbh. it's just a recipe, very tasty.

i'd have thought it would be funny too, if it was anything at all.

FAQtothefuture · 26/07/2009 23:06

I know that you know that - but I'm still not sure my IL's with English firmly as their second language would understand that so well or find it as amusing as well do.

Anyhow thank you all for your suggestions.

We are actually either going to have

Roast Beef

or

a BBQ

depends on what the weather does in the morning

I'll tell you this... the fact that they are African makes a big difference too..although they are influenced by American culture they will have very strong beliefs with regard to their african heritage...but I'm sure they would appreciate your care with regard to their feelings Faq...hope you all have a great time

FAQtothefuture · 27/07/2009 00:36

thanks Mum - I do have a pretty good idea how they've view it - I lived out there for 2 1/2yrs - and I showed DH the recipe and he went

Mumcentreplus · 27/07/2009 00:39

OhBling · 27/07/2009 11:32

FAQ - if you haven't already firmed up the roast beef/bbq idea, if you search in food/recipes under my name I've got a great Lamb shoulder/chickpea/butternut recipe which is brilliant, easy, and very cost effective. And it comes from my favourite South African recipe book!

FAQtothefuture · 27/07/2009 13:54

thanks OhBling - as you posted I was at Morrisons buying a very large beef roast which is about to go in the oven........well once the kitchen floor dries - DH has just washed it

OhBling · 27/07/2009 14:20

Aaah, next time. You can't really go wrong with a large roast beef anyway.

FWIW - I am SA with lots of Zimbo friends, and I totally understood your concern re "Ghetto"!
