Who remembers Arctic Roll? Or was given it as a 'treat' pudding as a school meal?

because I was just doing my online shop and there it was! Birds eye have brought it back for public consumption!

have ordered it (the one with the raspberry ripple - this was the one given to us at school) to see what the dcs think.

They always mystified me Arctic Rolls. They seemed just, well, unnecessary in a way lol.

We had 'Manx pie' at school

Now WHAT THE HELL is that? I can't remember much about it except it was a one-pot meal (served in an individual dish) and was meat based

Any ideas?

Also remember delicious little choc biscuits that I think were made with cocoa powder

Dumbledoresgirl · 13/06/2009 21:43

Was it made of cat tails Bernard?

Ahem, we have artic roll in our freezer because it is a frim favourite with all our family!

Also, who mentioned prunes? I have had to give them to my 6 month DTs this week on HV advice cos of horrendous constipation and both of them absolutely loved them...

Dumbledoresgirl · 13/06/2009 21:48

Twas me, I am prune woman (not). I also gave them to my oldest child when he was a baby, for constipation. It didn't last long though (feeding him prunes) because I couldn't even bear to be on the right side of the spoon!

Just Googled Manx pie and didn't come up with much

But I got the gist it might have had something to do with the Isle of Mann

Dumbledoresgirl · 13/06/2009 21:50

Did you see this NNB?

popsycal · 13/06/2009 21:52

manchester tart!!!

notnowbernard · 13/06/2009 21:54

I didn't see that, DG... thanks

However, it does beg the question: WHY was my primary school in the SE of England serving traditional Isle of Man fare?!

lou33 · 13/06/2009 21:54

my mum used to give it to me

i saw it instore a couple of months ago and bought it for my kids and they loved it

ThingOne · 13/06/2009 21:56

I think I'm going to have to try some Arctic Roll for my boys!

retiredgoth2 · 13/06/2009 21:59

...I loved Arctic roll.

Not as classy as some 70s desserts, 'tis true. You couldn't serve it to guests at the end of a dinner party (prawn cocktail, steak and chips with mushrooms for a continental touch, and tia maria coffee) as you could Vienetta.

...a marvel nonetheless.

As a child my parents would often serve me what they termed 'Antarctic Roll'. This was identical to Arctic Roll, but without the jam. Or the sponge.

lou33 · 13/06/2009 22:03

mine was always served half frozen still

i think my mum had a thing about it, she always served dairy cream sponge cake still hard in the middle too

Sidge · 13/06/2009 22:03

Ooh we used to get Arctic Roll as a special treat - we didn't routinely have puddings.

And we used to have it with Ice Magic on top!

School dinner puddings were prety good, we used to get that chocolate sponge with chocolate custard quite often and that was yummy.

sleepyeyes · 13/06/2009 22:54

Ah Arctic roll never was the age gap between me and DH so obvious when DH rediscovered it last month.

DH: ARTIC ROLL wow how amazing lets buy loads, oh I've missed this. OHHH wonderful.
ME: It's only a desert love calm down. I don't think I've ever had arctic roll before, at least I don't remember it.
DH: How awful!

popsycal · 13/06/2009 23:08

sidge - i longedlonged for ice magic
posh

SuperBunny · 14/06/2009 00:42

Ooo, arctic roll! I might get some when I come back to England.

We had Ice Magic - you had to shake the bottles really well otherwise it wouldn't set. And you could save the bottles, stick them on a bike helmet and cover it with tinfoil to make a viking hat.

PrettyCandles · 14/06/2009 00:51

Arctic Rolls were always a summertime pudding when we were kids. My brother and I would always complain that Mum and Dad wouldn't give us large enough portions. So one day Mum gave us a whole Roll each and left us to it. We finished them - just! - but I never ate another slice. Couldn't face it.

I've noticed that they're available again, and once we're off our dairy-free diet, I'm longing to try them.

nannynick · 14/06/2009 00:55

At school in early 80's, I remember having Artic Roll with Pink Custard. Can't recall if the custard was hot or cold... possibly it varied by the day - Monday warm custard, Tuesday cold (left over from Monday!).

Smithagain · 14/06/2009 18:40

I loved Arctic Roll - will now have to go and look for some.

Was not so keen on the haggis, neeps and tatties that our school decided to put on the menu in some fit of Scottish Nationalist fervour. These days I love haggis, but the idea that is might be a great thing to serve to primary school aged children just seems bizarre.

ParisHiltonSequins · 14/06/2009 18:41

YUK

no my mum was a home made merchant

ProfYaffle · 14/06/2009 18:50

I remember Arctic roll being posh, we couldn't afford it in our house. Certainly didn't get it at school, far too fancy.

fufflebum · 14/06/2009 18:51

I remember Artic Roll and saw it in the supermarket. We had it a couple of weeks back. DH was appreciative but kids did not seem to see what the fuss was all about!

sazzerbear · 14/06/2009 18:55

I had arctic roll recently in hospital when having ds, it was a real trip down memory lane. I think it's been brought back as a cheap pud alternative as times are tough, not for nostalgic reasons which is a shame!
