ANGELMOTHER · 01/05/2003 13:20

Am in the surprising position of having actually secured a regular babysitter and on top of that my Bil & partner are coming over for the weekend......therefore need good restaurant recommendations as haven't been out of the house in 3 yrs
Not fussy what style so long as quality and service is v.good.
Any recommendations appreciated

theres an indiann restaurant in kingswood (near redhill) which is excellent - Can;t remember the name though - will c if I can find out for you.

The Priory - hotel in Nutfield is fairly good but pricey. Tutu L'Auberge has, unfortunately, closed down. I like the Gurkha restaurant in Reigate/Oxted, The Living Room in Reigate, La Barbe in Reigate.

Reigate High Street has a few good places:
The Dining Room - is the 'poshest' - upstairs above 'Si' italian restaurant. People 'dress up' to go there - expect to pay at least £45-50/ head for dinner. The food is fab though - Antony Tobin is/(was?) chef & owner.
Food is 'modern English' I think - in reality a good mixture. Probably not so good for veggies...

Gurkha Kitchen at the end of the High Street does great Nepalese food - more informal - quite busy, vibrant atmosphere.

Sweet Potato, around the corner at end of High Street, is a fairly newish restaurant - modern-ish stainless-steel/ wood decor. Michael Winner was there a couple of weeks ago and gave some aspects of it a good review... couldn't bring himself not to complain about something of course...

Otherwise there's French La Barbe on Bell Street (bit stuffy I always think...) or the traditional oak-beamed Italian, La Lanterna which is below La Barbe and very homely with huge portions of steaming pasta and VERY friendly staff...

Sorry, but Redhill simply has no decent restaurants. In fact, I wouldn't say that Redhill had anything that even classified as a restaurant, let alone a decent one!

Other thought would be Cloisters Restaurant at Nutfield Priory - been there a few times - good for family get-togethers as they have discreet alcoves for you to get pissed in together!

HTH

Oops Sykes - paused in writing my message and now we have posted at the same time.... great minds think alike obviously!
You must get out more.... the DINING Room.... have to say, The Living Room sounds much more comfortable though!!

sykes · 01/05/2003 16:09

Whoops - never v good at names at the best of times.

LIZS · 01/05/2003 19:09

Agree with the recommedations for Reigate, also Mo2's comments re: Redhill! But if you fancy visiting one of the villages instead, for special occasions we used to go to the King Charles in Bletchingly, The Old House in Burstow (both excellent traditional/continental cuisine) or La Bonne Auberge on Tilburstow Hill near Godstone(French). Haven't been for a couple of years so hope they haven't changed hands or standards slipped.

Have a good time,

I was going to suggest the Nutfield Priory too, Sykes & Mo2. Very posh and rather pricey but I love it Very nice choccies with the after dinner coffee.

ANGELMOTHER · 01/05/2003 20:37

Thanks everyone, should have known you'd have the low down Mo2, the Nutfield Priory sounds great but think will keep it for a special occasion, like when I finally pass my driving test......

Perhaps we should have a Mumsnet meet up at Nutfield, then we can get pissed together quietly in a cloister !! Hey, let's blow the budget and stay the night too - think the rooms are only £200 a night.....

Incidently, are you off to Donyngs at all this w/e angelmother - we never did meet up!

SoupDragon · 01/05/2003 21:08

The tower suite (Byron) is £300 per night.

Mo2 · 02/05/2003 09:15

hmmm... SoupDragon ... DO tell us more about how you know........sounds romantic....

sykes · 02/05/2003 09:34

I'm the bringer of bad news. La Bonne Auberge/Tutu L'Auberge closed late last year. And the King Charles has gone too in Bletchingley. Is the Old House anygood - haven't tried that one.

LIZS · 02/05/2003 10:48

Oh dear Sykes , how sad . Hadn't realised how much they must have relied upon our (infrequent) custom !!!! LOL We tried to support local independent businesses where feasible (would never have taken a toddler to any of these!) rather than the big franchises which survive despite their variable qualities and service levels.

We used to like the Old House because it was quaint, not too expensive (relatively speaking)and we never felt rushed so could take time to enjoy the evening and food. Perhaps someone who has visited more recently could advise too.

ANGELMOTHER · 03/05/2003 09:05

Heading off tonight, thanks so much for all recommendations, now I have a regular babysitter I intend to visit all restaurants at some stage. Not sure how the w/e will shape up Mo2 as BIL etc here all w/e but may need to escape to Donyngs on Monday will post here if going .....would be nice to meet up b4 Weds.

Mo2 - I know because we've just cancelled our regular booking for the Nutfield Priory (in Byron as it happens) as we have to go to a wedding in Wales. We're staying in something like a Holiday in for it!! We try go to the Priory for our wedding anniversary as that's where we had our wedding night We've even taken the boys (they have baby listening) DS2 had an exploding breast fed nappy all over the bed once!

The £300 includes dinner & breakfast as well by the way - what a bargain Byron's our favourite suite although Wordsworth has a much bigger bed and Tennyson had a double sized jacuzzi bath. Sigh.... drifts off reminiscing...

Look here

Mo2 · 03/05/2003 19:37

ooh weird - we also had our Wedding reception and wedding night there! Just think - probably slept (?) in the same bed
