Is sucralose bad for you?

DS loves those yoghurt drinks you can buy. I normally get him Mango Lassi, but the other day I thought I'd try the Asda Great Stuff ones instead. Now on reading the ingredients I've noticed they've got Sucralose in them. I know you can get Tesco Kids yogurt drinks aswell but I'm not sure what's in them, anyone got any to hand?

sucralose is Splenda. i would rather give my child real sugar over manufactured sugar tbh. i normally only buy a lge pot of plain yoghurt, dollop portions in a sml bowl or pot and put honey in it.

aha, yoghurt drinks. i've never bought those....

suely you can make those at home? at least it is what i tell myself about lots of things i see in the shops

Agree, would prefer real sugar to artificial sweetner any day.

plantwoman · 06/06/2009 20:07

Agree - artificial sweetners are nasty and have been linked to cancer (although that could be a DailyMail hyped up beyond belief story....)
Real sugar is better - just make sure you clean your teeth

I know sorbitol, saccharin and aspartame have been linked to cancer. A quick google informs me that sucralose is too.

I heard somewhere that xylitol (it's in toothpaste and chewing gum) and acesulfame K were supposedly the safest sweeteners.

xylitol is great (still has calories though not as many as sugar) is great for your teeth too.

Is 2.79 for 500g in holland and barret I think.

Oooh thanks I think I'll get some of that. I don't eat much sugar but can't stand coffee without it and i do like the occasional cup of coffee.

Another look on google tells me there hasn't been many studies on Acesulfame K and a few that were done showed animals getting cancer and thyroid tumours so think I'll avoid that one too until there's been adequate research into it to prove that it is safe.

Strangely whilst I've been googling, pages for how marvellous pectin is for your health keep coming up. I guess I better start eating lots of jam

It may take a while to get used too as it has a "fresh" taste to it but now I love it and cant have normal sugar anymore.
(much better for my dentist bills)

I've heard good stuff about Stevia too.

Just bumping this for somebody.

If you use stevia make sure you use the unrefined powder or liquid extract. If it is unrefined it will be dark green in colour. The white stevia powder is refined and probably not that good for you.
