Soooo, it seems my assumptions have been wrong. i always thought making your own bread would be expensive? apparently not as its on the eat cheap bit. Is it really only 20p per loaf? and what things do you have to buy, ingredients wise, for normal plain bogstandard and CHEAP bread?? thankyou

I make cheap bread all the time (there's some in the oven now). Just basic value plain flour, yeast, water, salt and sugar or honey.

I had a bit of left-oven dough and rolled it flat and flung it on top of a tin of roasting onions, garlic and chicken thighs for the last 20 minutes of cooking. It was delicious

Here's another go at the link zan1bar was trying to do - I make it too, with sourdough or commercial yeast new york times no-knead bread the only costs are flour, yeast, salt, water and oven time.

Not much difference - instant sachet is best for novice, comes in small box of 6 or 8 x 6g or 7g, but I use granules more often now (125g tub).

There is also a bread recipe on the yeast sachet these days.

thanks for that, ill get cracking then!

Once you have your yeast etc, please try the NYTimes no-knead bread (link above)- it is by far the easiest method. You just need a casserole or lidded pan to cook it in - the pan forms a mini-steam oven within the oven.
