Help! Weekend lunch for people with allergies- No dairy, no citrus, no eggs, oh and one is vegetarian!

EachPeachPearMum · 28/05/2009 19:57

Friends coming saturday lunchtime... 2 adults (1 veggie) and 2 children- cannot eat any dairy or eggs, and one cannot eat any citrus either. What can I make for them and us that is nice but simple- we are 2 adults 1 child and new baby- hence the need for simplicity.

I could do a roast... but what could I do for the vegetarian that is dairy/egg free?

how old are the children?

does the vegetarian eat fish?

first thought is salmon fillets/new potatoes/veg of choice - easy, quick, and fulfill a lot of the dietary issues (except the veggie, perhaps)

FrannyandZooey · 28/05/2009 20:04

wraps with felafel, hummus, salad, roasted veg (eg peppers, courgettes, mushrooms)?

thisisyesterday · 28/05/2009 20:05

oh do a lovely picnic=-y lunch.

nice crusty bread
bean salad
cous cous/pasta salad
baby tomatoes
lettuce
hummous and crudites
some nice meat and fish

that kind of thing. so easy to do and will cater for everyone

deaconblue · 28/05/2009 20:07

risotto? could do the Delia mushroom one that cooks in the oven so you don't ahve to stand and stir?
Will be sunny Saturday - why not do BBQ ~(veggie kebabs for veggie) and salad. Then your dh has to do all the cooking while you slob with glass of wine look after baby

GrapefruitMoon · 28/05/2009 20:07

Pasta with a tomato based sauce with some nice bread and if you feel up to it you could do a platter of antipasta stuff for starters (could keep any cold meat on separate plate)

deaconblue · 28/05/2009 20:07

arse my first attempt at striking out a phrase was a total failure

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 28/05/2009 20:07

I would suggest a meze style meal, so that everyone can pick what suits them. It is going to be hot this weekend (please let it be true!), so you don't want to be cooking a roast. Could you do falafel (shop bought), houmous, tahini, cherry toms, pitta bread, salad etc with some chicken and/or smoked salmon as an alternative for non-veggies? Most kids love houmous, pittas and cherry toms/cucumber in my experience.

Remember that they are coming for your company and that you have a new baby, so any short cuts are more than acceptable.

I know these people, I believe...

When we went to theirs they made us dhal and veg curry and rice. Pickles, popadoms, yog dips.

EachPeachPearMum · 28/05/2009 20:13

Ooh- loads of replies! Thank you...

children are 4, 3, and 2 (mine is 3, and will eat anything)

Pasta is good... I was thinking it was ruled out due to gluten intolerance, but was being dim...

What is in felafel?
fish is out. meze sounds great... but I think the visiting children are a leetle bit fussy- will eat standard veg (carrots, broc, sweetcorn etc) but don't like peppers, courgette etc...
wraps are good- maybe fajitas with chicken separate...

myEye????? really?
They are the only family in britain like this?

but that's the beauty of the picnic-y/meze/buffet type meal. you can have a ton of different stuff and there is bound to be something for everyone.
even if the visiting kids end up having bread and marmite lol

EachPeachPearMum · 28/05/2009 20:20

yes true... is it really going to be nice?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 28/05/2009 20:22

felafel is chickpeas mostly
are vegan
so do they have gluten probs also?

EachPeachPearMum · 28/05/2009 20:24

nope- checked email, was being dim

Falafel are mainly chick peas. Have just had yummy M&S ones and they are egg/dairy/meat free, but have lemon juice in! They are lovely in wraps. I think that offering two or three fillings is the way forward.

P.S: If the DCs coming are very fussy then the parents should bring something that they know will be eaten. My youngest is fussy and also has nut and egg allergies and I ALWAYS take a back up with me when we eat with friends.

check here for weather

gonna be nice here

PistachioLemon · 28/05/2009 20:31

EachPeach and MyEye, I'm sure I also know these people and last time they were here I cooked an aubergine curry, dhal, sag aloo and lots of pilau rice - went down a treat.

However, if it's hot the wrap idea is wonderful too because everyone can take what they like, including the children.

EachPeachPearMum · 28/05/2009 20:43

am officially a bit freaked out now...

whereabouts do you live? I'm sure more than 1 family has this... allergies run in families for a start...

It is going to be nice, so picnic/meze is great idea- less mess in the house too

haha it's almost us, but not quite
i am veggie, we have 2 kids, one of whom can have no egg/dairy.

PistachioLemon · 29/05/2009 00:43

Outside London...but not that far away. Sorry for being deliberately vague, I'm terrified of being outed!

I think you should defo go for the picnic/meze, it's fun and EASY!

EachPeachPearMum · 29/05/2009 01:10

Not the same family then

I also have a felafel recipe to try after the slug thread....

Pheweee!

CharlotteVV · 29/05/2009 13:50

What about a potato salad? You could even make 2 different ones for veggie/carnivores!

Made some roasted mini salad potatoes the other days with just oil, rosemary and in the oven until they were crispy but would be good parboiled first - in hindsight!

Veggie Baked Stacks might be nice too - aubergine, beef toms, basil, courgette... I usually add mozzarella too but guess that's out!!!

CharlotteVV · 29/05/2009 13:51

Here's loads of potato salad recipes from british potato site: www.britishpotatoes.co.uk/potato-salads-2/

Good luck!! x x

Pizza without cheese?
dips with bread sticks, pitta, carrots, celery etc?
