What food can I make for first time mum/dad to keep in their freezer/fridge?

I am mid way through having work done in my kitchen. I remember those early days of living on toast and coleslaw or takeaways.

I was thinking of making a big bolognese sauce and buying them some fresh pasta (does that freeze?) and maybe some creamy mash with sausages cooked with onion gravy? portioned off.

Is there anything else you can thinking of I wanted to do about three different things and am devoid uttely of any inspiration.

I have recently doubled swedish meatballs and frozen one portion.

Lasagne, Chicken Pie, sausage casserole, pasta bake, chilli with some jacket potatoes (or potato wedges part cooked)

I hate cooking Lasagne

Past aback is a great idea, maybe with a cheese and bacon sauce?

we did tuna, sweetcorn, tinned tomatoes, and pasta with breadcrumb/cheese topping - that's nice

I have mine currently stocked with, chicken casserole, meatballs, cannalloni (but if you hate making lasagne you will detest making this!), fruit crumbles, home made pasta sauces, sausage and leek parcels, quiches, pecan pie, cottage pie, loaf type cakes, lots of homemade soups and breads. DC4 was born yesterday so will prob be empty again by the end of next week. It's a lovely idea to do this for a friend

That really is a fantastic array of food.

I will work on a list as things are quite hectic here too. I like the crumble idea, then some custard too.

it's a lovely idea. just before i had ds i cooked like a lunatic and stuffed the freezer - the things i really appreciated were comfort foods: fish pie, shepherds pie, beef stew, meatballs, soup and puddings: crumbles, apple pie, stewed fruit (ate with icecream - a few cartons of this wil always go down well...). would also think about a stash of teacake/hotcross bun type things which could go in the freezer = i ate loads of this kind of thing buttered when i was bfing and it defrosts in the toaster on high setting.
i also made stirfries and fish stew but didnt really want them after i'd had ds (you want fast calories and stodge while feeding, not what i usually eat). would avoid curry/chili as some babies react badly to it in the milk.
when my sister had her baby i basically just made cakes, biscuits, brownies etc - always crave sugar when you're bfing and if for some reason you dont you'l have loads of visitors who will scarf the lot/

ooo curly just emailed you as didnt see any announcement - CONGRATULATIONS XXX

Our church Mums group does this for every member who has a baby - we take a meal each to them for 10 days...

I tend to always do chicken chilli or pasta bolognese - they seem to be universally popular. I also do a sausage and sweet root veg casserole which is really popular with older children too...

I tend to have soup in my freezer which also tends to go to new mums - makes for a really easy lunch.

Littlefish · 28/05/2009 17:34

What a fantastic idea Bathsheba!

I would have liked:

Shepherds Pie
Fish Pie
Chicken casserole
Lasagne
Chicken curry
Chilli
Sausage casserole
Bolognaise
Leek & potato soup

Also:
Flapjacks
Chocolate brownies
Apple crumble

A real easy option, dependant upon their tastes in food, is goats cheese pastries - just roll out the pastry, cut into squares, fill each one with some chevre cheese, top with pesto, or a good chutney, or sauteed peppers & onions, fold into parcels and freeze - they take about 15 mins and it's easy to boil some baby spuds and make a salad - they don't take up much room either.

NotSoRampantRabbit · 28/05/2009 17:44

I'm due any day and second the need for comfort food/stodge for those early, exhausting days.

I have:

~Bolognaise sauce
Shepherds pie mix
Chicken pie mix
Leek and potato soup
Meatballs
Fresh tomato sauce for pasta

Am going to knock up a big sausage cassserole tonight and bung that in too.

Am hoping that friends might contribute too!

iHateDairyLea · 28/05/2009 21:59

These are superb suggestions. I forgot to mention that money is a bit tight so the quiches and cheese parcels and flapjacks will stretch far, unless there are any other ideas for money saving options.
Thank you.
