cricket tea - suggestions?

Actually, it will be lunch, not tea, and for boys under 15s. Have stupidly volunteered to organise this for next week (gets me out of bar duty!). International team (I am in Holland) but want to do a decent spread as cricket is, as we all know, THE English game . Seriously though, think food at last week's away game was basically ham and cheese rolls and squash so don't have to be fancy but surely, there should be cake!

Ideas anyone?

Asparagas tarts?
Home-made sausage rolls or Scotch eggs?
Smoked salmon and cream cheese sarnies?

Followed by Eton Mess and/or a cake of your choosing!

Oh God no - keep it simple! Cricket teas are for men who are hungry and don't want fancy stuff.

Lots of sandwiches and cakes. Possibly pork pies/sausage rolls. Things that can be picked up in one hand and shoved into the gob without the need for fancy cutlery or crockery!!!

Chunky bread and tasty cheddar cheese (my mum used to cut thick slices of a Vienna loaf. Real sausage rolls (decent size not bite size). Men aren't much into quiche - or at least not when they are together!
Good Victoria sponge cake - jam and buttercream. Don't do chocolate - they get it all over their whites!

Well, I agree with the others that it needs to be simple, and as it's for boys and under 15s keep it even simpler.

Sausage rolls

pork pies

nice but simple sandwitches

cake

maybe flapjacks?

I'd make chocolate brownies as well as cake - boys under 15 will love that! Otherwise, agree with OMDB.

You could put out some fruit sliced up as well, but it's 50/50 whether they'll eat it. Some will, some won't.

Fruit + 15 year old boys.

You have just defined an oxymoron I think.

oxocube · 27/05/2009 20:21

Think friend and I are going for rolls/sandwiches - ham or cheese as lots of Indian kids who are veggie, maybe egg mayo too, sponge cake, brownies, apples and satsumas and crisps. Maybe a few sausage rolls mainly for the parents/ coaches. Thanks all for the suggestions

scones - have to be on a cricket tea menu

fortyplus · 27/05/2009 20:26

I would say lots of different sandwiches
For 'healthy stuff' carrot sticks, slices of cucumber and cherry tomatoes
Sausage rolls
Plain crisps
Lots of cake

fortyplus · 27/05/2009 20:27

Oh... and label the sandwiches or they'll be pulling them apart to see what's in them
