Am planning tea for tomorrow
(yes i like to be organised )

and thought of frittata as I have some eggs that need using, but just looked at them and they are 3 days past use by date. (2 days past today)

I should bin them shouldn't I???

yes, i would.
don't bin them

CherryChoc · 26/05/2009 20:15

Put them in a bowl of water. If they sink, bin them. If they float, they're fine.

I have never looked at a sell by date of an egg, ever.

Mintyy · 26/05/2009 20:15

Nope. They will be absolutely completely fine.

Doodle2U · 26/05/2009 20:16

I'd use them. Sell by dates tend towards over-cautious.

CherryChoc · 26/05/2009 20:16

Oops sorry - other way around! Fresher if they sink.

CherryChoc · 26/05/2009 20:17

Furtively checks google

evieb300 · 26/05/2009 20:17

If you put the egg in a glass of water and it floats to the top, it's gone off and you need to throw it away. Otherwise it's fine.

You can also tell the freshness depending on whether the egg stands on its end or 'lays down', but I can never remember which one means it's fresher! They are both fine to eat though.

CherryChoc · 26/05/2009 20:18

Was right the second time, if they are fresh, they sink. If they are stale, they float. If they sort of half stand on end, you can eat them if they are cooked throroughly, ie hard boiled/omelette/etc, but not part cooked, ie runny boiled/fried/poached egg.

HTH

yes, if they pas the floating/not floating test and if i was not pg.

CherryChoc · 26/05/2009 20:28

What is the verdict?

simpson · 26/05/2009 20:38

Ok 3 eggs totally fine and stayed at bottom.

one egg bobbled a bit but eventually stayed at bottom.

Did I mention that I am cooking this for me and 15mth old DD??

Does her age change anything??

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 26/05/2009 20:44

Assuming your dd is of normal robust toddler health, you'll both be fine. They've passed the "float" test.

We don't often eat eggs in my house, Dh is the only one who likes them, so sometimes we have eggs weeks past their dates.

pavlovthecat · 26/05/2009 20:46

Agree your DD will be fine as long as she is of good normal health and you cook them well.

simpson · 26/05/2009 20:48

Yes DD is fine.

Thanks guys

frittata it is for tea tomorrow

i have used eggs 3 weeks after their date and im alive (and had no ill effects as a result either)

lottiebunny · 26/05/2009 20:51

I eat eggs weeks past sell by date. I've never come across a bad egg. All that happens is that the white gets slacker (not right work but bear with me) around the yolk so no good for things like poached egg but fine for scrambled or omelette.

isenhart7 · 26/05/2009 22:21

I have never considered the sell by date on eggs. Some eggs won't sink to the bottom of a bowl or glass of water but as long as they don't float they're still okay.

simpson · 26/05/2009 22:33

Glad it is not just me that doesn't look at use by dates for eggs.

TBH not really used to cooking with eggs but DD is severely intolerant to dairy & soya but ok with eggs so am upping it in her our diet iyswim.

Not keen on eggs myself but think I can manage fritatta!!

The great thing with eggs is, as soon as you crack them you'll know whether or not they are fine by the smell.

If they're off you will know as they will stink to high heaven.

So, if in doubt, crack each egg into a cup and give it a sniff before adding to your recipe.

Eggs last for ever and ever and ever though

sparkybabe · 27/05/2009 10:15

I read somewhere that a sell-by date on eggs is up to 5 weeeks after it has been laid. So a few more days is not going to make a lot of difference.

I use stuff past it's best all the time. If it's not actually green or slimy it's good to go.

Cook them properly tho.

Cosmosis · 27/05/2009 14:33

I ignore sell by dates on everything. If it looks ok and smells ok it gets eaten in this house.

meltedmarsbars · 29/05/2009 23:14

Two of my kids were sent off to the woods to dispose of some very rotten eggs.

The older one came back a minute late screaming with rage and livid.

Her beloved brother had aimed an egg at a tree.

He missed the tree.

got his sister full on the side of the face.

The egg was definately rotten, has no sell-by stamp but did stink!!!
