Deep fat frying?

I ditched my deep fat fryer over ten years ago - we only used it for chips and it made the house smell.
But I keep reading recipes where things (often aubergines) are deep fried, and we recently went to someone's house who made freshly fried chips and they were delicious!
So, can you buy very small deep fryers? And can you get one that doens't make the house smell like a chip shop?
Thanks, Sam

This thread is very old, but if you’re here looking for a fryer to cook chips to perfection, we’ve recently updated our best deep fat fryer page with plenty of great Mumsnetter-approved options, including compact models. We hope you find it useful.

I use an ordinary pan then scoop the food out with a slatted spoon and keep the window open when things are frying.

you can get small ones from Lakeland - my mum has one and thinks its great - if you change the oil regularly it helps to minimise the smell, but I think you can still smell it

Thank you
