Quick question about frozen prawns

passionberry · 14/05/2009 14:18

I bought them cooked but not frozen. Then I froze them on the day of purchase. Then I forgot to get them out of the frezer this morning.

It says on the packet to de-frost in the fridge for 12 hours

Can I cook them from frozen?

Or should I run under a cold tap for a bit first, then cook them?

Or not risk it?

not sure what i would do but some friends we stayed with recently got theirs out the freezer and defrosted in the microwave. We didn't get dodgy tums afterwards so......

With bags of frozen prawns, I put them straight from a freezer into a bowl, pour a kettle of boiling water on them and leave them there a couple of minutes. Defrosts them every time and never had a dodgy tummy!

They should defrost really quickly, I'd put them in a sieve or colander, run them under the cold tap and leave to drain for a couple of hours.

They defrost really quickly under the cold tap.

Prawns defrost pretty quickly at room temperature (IME), I wouldn't do anything 'hot' to them as you only cook them further and they can become rubbery. Just leave them out and they should be ok by teatime. If they're still a bit frosty you can run them under the cold tap.

I do the boiling water thing If I'm only using them for sarnies or something. Prob wouldn't for dinner.
