Those of you who make cakes (decorated/sugarpaste ones) as a business, can I ask you a couple of questions, please?

I've been making cakes as hobby for a while and have been asked by a friend to make one for her dd's birthday and she'll pay me for it.

I have no idea how much to charge her.

It's for a 6 inch round chocolate cake made into a fairy castle similar to the Debbie Brown Cupcake Princess castle but with modelled princesses, not cupcakes.

She's also asked for 20 cupcakes made to look like prinesses/pirates.

What would you charge for the cake and cupcakes together and what would you charge for just the cake?

Also, do I need to do anything about the food hygiene/registering with anyone. Will I need to do this if I'm being paid?

TIA.

You need comeoveneer, I think - sorry, I have never been paid for a cake!

She doesn't appear to be about atm . Do you think she's gorn and got a life?

Do you think £30 is okay for the cake and maybe £10-£15 for the cupcakes?

When I make cakes for friends I always end up just charging for the ingredients/decoration as I feel 'odd' asking for labour costs. What you have described sounds like quite a lot of sugar craft. I would charge £25 /£30 for the cake and it depends how much work is on the cupcakes.

That sounds like a lot less than the market rate, but as it is your first paid engagement I guess you need to start low.

X-posts, Josette .

I usually do it in lieu of a present but she wants to pay me properly.

I guess around £30 isn't unreasonable then.

Is COV or anybody else about tonight?

Stealth, do you think that's too low, then? It's only a smallish cake and not too much modelling but I'm clueless as to the going rate. How much would you think?

IIWY I would look at the Waitrose prices and go from there (bearing in mind their cakes are relatively simple)
