What can I do with plain tofu?

I usually buy the marinated chunks but Sainsbo's substitued a pack of plain in my home delivery. Any ideas what I can do with minimum ingredients/hassle to make it tasty?

Fajitas with one of those El paso Fajita Kits?

Marinate in soy sauce, with perhaps ginger, garlic, chilli if you have them.

Hmm. I will try that, Kathy. How long to marinate and what then - fry it?

Ooh, yes, what Kathy said. Then fry it with some vegetables and have it with noodles or rice.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 11/05/2009 11:07

Any length of time really - few hours if you have a few hours, few minutes if you haven't!
Yes, fry. It won't come out like the marinated stuff you buy but will be fine in its own way.

Yep just marinate it, something like kathy's suggestion or using any marinade ingredients you like. I often use it as a substitute for chicken in chinese etc and just use the ingredients that the chicken recipe called for.

Try griddling it. Throw on a bit of soya sauce, ginger and olive oil.

I did a recipe which involved marinating it with teriyaki and booze, then roasting it with garlic. It was okayyyy. The sauce didn't permeate the tofu though. But DP liked it.

My favourite thing is to freeze it, then defrost (in a dish of boiling water is quickest), then squeeze out the water and cut into chunks. Marinate in a mixture of 3 tblsp soy sauce and one of cider or wine vinegar. Then toss in seasoned flour and fry.

Sounds more of a faff than it is - and is delicious in stews or on pasta/salads. Freezing changes the texture and makes it more chewy and meaty.

I do the same as Kathy, my tip would be to cut the chunks fairly small so there's more marinade to tofu (not sure if I've explained that very well!) I like it added to egg fried rice.

ProfYaffle · 12/05/2009 16:05

Oops, you've already cooked it. imho ok is about as good as it gets for tofu smoked has more flavour but can be hard to get hold of.

Thanks ProvLady and ProfYaffle - both good tips for next time. I am a veggie on a diet so it's good stuff for me, I'm just keen to find the best way of cooking it.
