printed icing thing - cake decorating question

So I'm making a fancy-schmancy sugar-paste birthday cake for ds2's birthday in a couple of weeks time. When I was in the cake decorating shop discussing the design, the woman in there told me that they can print photos etc. onto a sheet of icing so that you can personalise your cake. Apparently you take them in a computer print-off max 6 x 9 inches and anything that's on it (photos, lettering, logos) they can replicate on a sheet of icing, which you can then cut up and use to adorn your cake.

But it's £6 for the sheet, which rather ramps up the budget for the cake.

Has anyone had a go with this, and if so, how effective were the results? I don't want to waste my £6, but were it to transform my cake into something truly amazing, I might be persuaded

I have just made a power rangers cake for ds2's birthday tomorrow with one I got from ebay for £2.40 inc p&p in a very sturdy envelope!

They do any character you want, or if you want anything different you can email them.

I wouldn't say its the most spectacular cake ever, but its a way of getting him a themed cake without coughing up tons of cash for one of those rubbish sugary confections. I just made 2 x rectangular sponge cakes, put jam and stuff between then then a layer of icing on top to stick this A4 sized power rangers picture.

Will try to find link.

I also got some power rangers fairy cake toppers too for him to take to nursery!

here you are

the prices vary depending on design - maybe Power Ranger is last years thing!

btw I wouldn't say it transformed the cake into something amazing - its a very obviously home made sandwich cake with bought topper on top! But hey its for a 3 year old he will love it.

Got nothing to add, just wanted this on my threads so I can come back for Flibbs link!
DS1 wants an Alien Vs Monsters cake but I refuse to buy crap supermarket cake.

After moving house last year and having NO KITCHEN the week before ds1's party, I bought the supermarket crap cake.

Spongebob effing squarepants.

Those things have a shelf life of weeks, what on earth can be in them. I had one small piece (well so did everyone else I didn't get much for my £9!) and got a headache 2 mins later.

I put the headache down to the cake of course and not the having just dealt with 18 3 4 and 5 year old boys for 2 hours
