Confused - raisins and sultanas!

What's the difference?

Looking on the back of the packs and they're made in exactly the same way from exactly the same grapes from exactly the same region.

Gosh yes!! What is the bloody difference?
And where do currants come in?

I have always thought that raisins were black grapes and sultanas were white grapes.

This is what I found when I googled:

Dark raisins are the most common variety and start as green grapes then darkens as they dry.

White/golden raisins (muscats) are made of white muscat grapes which are seeded and oven-dried rather than by the sun.

Sultanas are more popular in Europe and come from a seedless yellow grape and are usually softer and sweeter than other varieties.

Currants are made from Black Corinth grape called Zante. They are tiny, seedless, and very sweet and aromatic.

meggymoo - might be right as in tescos these sultanas and raisins are the same grapes!

That is really weird, because you can buy fresh currants (small, bright red). I have seen them growing on trees in California. They are not a variety of grape.

Yeah, fresh currants (red or black) and dried currants are completely unrelated. I don't know why.

fresh currants grow on bushes and are unrelated to grapes - they are either black, red or white.

blackcurrents are what go into things like ribena.

dried raisins rehydrate when a 2 year old puts them up her nose and has to have them removed with a doctors huge tweezers

And they all pop out the other end of your average toddler very similar to how they went in .

definitely Gomez - hardly seems worth giving them too them. Also happens with dried apricot, apple rings and sweetcorn - to name but a few
