Whats the difference between baking powder and baking soda?

I am trying to make Banana bauer's cereal bars but don't have baking soda. Can I leave it out or use baking powder instead? Thanks.

baking soda is just sodium bicarbonate, and is used as a raising agent if theres something acidic in the mix for it to react with. Baking powder is bicarb plus a dry acid, usually tartaric, which is used when the mix isn't itself acidic. So, it should work but the result might be a little sourer than it should be. If the mix includes anything like lemon juice probably omit that to get the balance right.

Ive got bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartare so I might have to look for a different flap jack recipe.

according to wiki baking powder is baking soda with an acid added.
Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate or just bicarb.
I can't find a list of alternatives online.

Personally I would try it with the baking powder.

use the bicarbonate of soda (that is the same thing as baking soda)
