South African Peppermint Crisp Tart or Koeksisters?

I'm booking S African caterers for a summer BBQ party and they offer some great-sounding puddings. I thought probably koeksisters as they sound like you can eat them casually without plates and crockery, but the peppermint crisp tart does sound delicious ...

Any recommendations, as I've never tried either?

I was a kid in SA - and I can honestly say I never heard of this - must be regional thing (I was a 'Vaalie) or probably too busy eating the koeksisters and melktert!!

warthog · 06/05/2009 13:29

you would pronounce it cook - sisters. good enough.

my first preference would be milk tert, then followed by koeksisters.

the cape gooseberry tart will also be lovely.

definitely no to the peppermint crisp tart. peppermint crisps are a chocolate bar so i guess all they'd do is scatter bashed up peppermint crisp over the top? a friend once made it for me and i thought it was pretty dire.

We had the bow ties in a couple of restaurants in Joburg. I'd never noticed that I haven't seen them over here.

franch · 06/05/2009 13:38

Am now thinking cape gooseberry tart, maybe ... Safer choice, less potential yuck factor ...?

OP posts:
warthog · 06/05/2009 13:40

yes, i'd probably go with that too

muddleduck · 06/05/2009 13:43

Good choice.
If I was eating out I'd probably order the KS or the MT just for nostalgia value, but the gooseberry tart would probably taste better

what is the rest of the menu?

[nosey foreigner emoticon]

I have a vote for Peppermint Crisp tart from our South African teacher - she says she'll make us some if someone can tell her where she can get Orley Whip or what it's English equivalent is ....do any of you know?

franch · 06/05/2009 13:49

We're having a spit-roast lamb basted in their 'unique basting sauce' with:
Mint Sauce
Freshly baked Rolls with farmhouse butter
Roasted Potatoes (with garlic & rosemary)
?Vrystaat Mielie Tert? (Corn Tart)
PLUS
Choose any 2 Salads from the following list:
Durban Curried Banana Salad
Juicy Carrot and Pineapple Salad
Three Bean Salad with a parsley twist
Sundried Surprise mixed leaf Salad
Peppadew and Noodle Salad

My provisional salad choices are the banana one and the sundried one, but I'm sure you guys will change my mind

sounds yummmmm!

i'd probably go with:

Three Bean Salad with a parsley twist
Sundried Surprise mixed leaf Salad
Peppadew and Noodle Salad

but that's because i don't like sweet and savoury mixed. you'd never see me ordering a ham and pineapple pizza!

franch · 06/05/2009 14:26

Fair enough! We only get 2 salads tho warthog, restrain yourself ...

warthog · 06/05/2009 14:29

ah yes of course...

i'd drop the sunrise surprise salad then. what the hell is in a surprise salad??? all the left overs they want to get rid of. probably very uncharitable of me!

BlingDreaming · 06/05/2009 15:24

I'm with warthog on this - ditch the banana salad. it's only good with curry. traditional, perhaps. Tasty, not so much.

Fleshwound - it's entirely possible, now that you mention it, that with a name like, "Transkei mud" that the peppermint crisp thing was a Cape thing and not for you vaalies?

So I take it then that you never sucked up milk through your peppermint crisp as a special treat?

BlingDreaming · 06/05/2009 15:26

Isn't orly whip just cheap and nasty cream in a jar?

I'm not a fan of the peppermint crisp dessert thing but I'd have thought condensed milk and/or caramel and cream would work? Like in this recipe.

Itsjustafleshwound · 06/05/2009 15:38

Bling - I was too busy eating Clifton powder straight out the tin ... didn't care too much for peppermint crisp chocolates - I prefered a Nosh !!

BiscuitStuffer · 06/05/2009 15:57

koeksisters are divine and a bit like baklava - you don't have to eat mountains of them!

BlingDreaming · 06/05/2009 16:10

Oh god. Clifton. I forgot about that. Yum....

Although it has to be said part of the appeal was the fact that my parents were too cheap to buy the stuff very often - mostly we had to stick to Oros!

Cheekycel · 06/05/2009 16:15

definately peppermint crisp tart! and cape malay koeksisters are softer than traditional plaited koeksisters, and covered with syrup then sprinkled with coconut. Divine! and a sunday morning treat with coffee .....hmmm....
orley whip, i use fresh cream here instead i think its called "emlea" or something else with an "e"? doesnt have the same consistency but a close second.

claireybee · 06/05/2009 16:17

I don't think of Koeksisters as a dessert...more of a snack

snigger · 06/05/2009 16:17

Sorry in advance about the mini-hijack - is there anyone on this thread that could enlighten me as to the make-up of "Fridge Tart"?

DH, 70's vintage Jo-burg resident, remembers it when he was young - he knows it had some kind of biscuit in it and they ate it at braais, but can't remember much else?

PS, My vote's with the peppermint crisp tart

BlingDreaming · 06/05/2009 16:20

Snigger - fridge tart is another classic.

I'm just trying to remember:

It was

  • marie biscuits
  • Cocoa
  • Shedloads of sugar
  • Some melted butter (maybe?)
  • an egg (yes, we all ate raw egg).

And maybe something else, but can't remember?

Then you bag it in a buttered dish, smack it in the fridge for a few hours and then eat it.

Heart attack waiting to happen but one of the first things I learnt to "bake" (the actual no baking part made my parents willing to trust me with it).

Itsjustafleshwound · 06/05/2009 16:21

There was a rather 'interesting' fridge tart my mum's friend use to make with cream crackers and ready made custard ....

BlingDreaming · 06/05/2009 16:21

Posh versions had pistachio nuts in them. Or other nuts.

Mmm... maybe I'll do some experimenting....

BiscuitStuffer · 06/05/2009 16:22

That sounds like 'refrigerator cake'....was is chocolate flavoured?

BlingDreaming · 06/05/2009 16:23

Fleshwound - that sounds disgusting.

But then I've never understood the whole cream crackers thing. Totally pointless IMO.

Itsjustafleshwound · 06/05/2009 16:28

It was !

My mum makes a noogy tart using crushed cream crackers - not so bad when crushed, mixed with sugar, cocoa and egg whites, cooked and covered in cream!!
