Is there such a thing as a decent boxed red wine?

Am breastfeeding newborn and DH doesn't really drink wine so buying whole bottles seems like a waste of money as I'll only have one glass every other night or so. But the 25cl bottles seem to be really crappy quality.

Can anyone recommend a box of red wine that is reliably decent, will keep well and actually tastes nice?? I don't have very sophisticated wine tastes (I like Merlot, Shiraz, Cab Sauv etc) but want something that doesn't taste of vinegar half the time...

Do you have Black Box wine in the UK? It's actually not bad.

Earlybird · 03/05/2009 18:37

Hi jabber - long time no 'see'!

Where do you get Black Box wine?

Earlybird · 03/05/2009 18:39

Also - just curious, how long will box wine 'keep' once opened?

earlybird! How are ya??? I am finally starting to get carry back on track a year after the move-during-the-worst-economic-crisis-in-years. We sold our house in TN after only 13 months on the market and that has taken a huge stress off.

How about you?

Oh, and you should be able to find it at most liquor stores. Great for parties.

Hmm, I've never really got on with Banrock Station -- every time I get a bottle it seems to be off.

Sherry, eh? Never actually drunk it, I suppose I associate it with old ladies! (Mind you, after three days of having two children I'm starting to feel like one myself...)

Jabber - Glad to know all is well. Let me know if you ever come back this way for a visit.

All ok here. Has this been a typical spring? It's wetter/gloomier than London! Good news about your house. We finally got my Mum's house sold for a ridiculous low price (it was on the market for a similar amount of time).

Thanks for the box wine tip!

Dh is the weather guy. Just asked his thoughts and he said in his opinion it had been a dryer than usual winter so now making up for it. I'm spectacularly unobservant about things like that

We also had to come down a fair bit from what we would have liked. dh was upset but I was just glad to be done with it.

Meg - buy wine in a screw top bottle. It won't go off if you re-seal it again after pouring a glass. Also if you are going a couple of days between opening it then stick it in the fridge. That will help keep it fresh.

The Co-op do a boxed Spanish red and also sell the same in bottle - we have bought the bottle to trial before investing in the box, so will come back to the thread when it has been tasted to let you know!

The Co-op fair trade wine box range is pretty good. Think they do Merlot, Shiraz etc. I buy them regularly

I love this Hardy's Stamp Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon.

Very moreish!!

MegBusset · 03/05/2009 22:25

Sadly I haven't got a Co-op nearby, and my local Tesco doesn't stock that Hardy's Stamp one

I do usually buy screw-top wines but have found lately that a lot of them still seem to be practically undrinkable. Perhaps I'm buying wine that's too cheap but I can't afford to spend over a fiver for a bottle that won't all get drunk!

Jacob's Creek isn't bad and that comes in a screw top bottle. I'll quite happily drink that. I usually pay about £5 a bottle for it.

Am having a glass of Co-op fair trade red as I type....
