Meat went out of date yesterday - Is it ok?

I know people will tell me I am being stupid and I know I am, but as long as it smells ok it is alright to use today isn't it, even though it went out of date yesterday?

It's stewing steak by the way. It's just I am very paranoid about meat.

As long as it's been stored properly it'll be fine. Honest.

bellavita · 30/04/2009 10:32

I wouldn't risk it tbh.

Stinkyfeet · 30/04/2009 10:33

I'd use it.

SnortyBartFast · 30/04/2009 10:34

i would use it as well, particularly if it doesnt smell

ilove · 30/04/2009 10:34

Yes

throckenholt · 30/04/2009 10:36

cook it well - should be fine. The dates are just guidelines - as much to cover any liability for the supplier.

But as you say - as long as it smells ok and it is cooked well should be no problem at all.

MrsMerryHenry · 30/04/2009 10:37

As long as it's not swine, it'll be fine.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 30/04/2009 10:39

yes, cook it long and slow. You'll know by the smell if it's dodgy or not.

bellavita · 30/04/2009 10:40

Only me saying no then - I would still bin it!

Greensleeves · 30/04/2009 10:41

we certainly can't afford to throw away perfectly good food because it's a day out of date! Just cook it through, it will be fine. Meat is often aged longer than that to improve the flavour anyway.

SaintGeorge · 30/04/2009 10:42

Use by dates are often known in the food industry as 'sue by dates', they are an estimate that err widely on the safe side.

I buy all my meat from the local butcher - it has no dates on it. I judge by the smell, the colour and the texture if it's OK to eat.

Haven't killed (or even seriously harmed ) anyone yet.

PMSLBrokeMN · 30/04/2009 11:45

It's beef, there's far more margin for error than with, say, chicken - if you don't want it, send it my way - beef always tastes better as it gets older!

SomeGuy · 30/04/2009 12:07

eat it!!!!

tutu100 · 30/04/2009 22:07

Just to update. The meat was definatly off when I opened it so if I'd have checked it first I could have avoided having to start this thread.

Thank you though everyone for tlling me what I should have had the guts to do myself which is smell it! If it smells ok it is fine if it honks it isn't!

(we ate the dodgy looking bacon instead which was well within bb date, but looked a bit funny. It smelt ok though. May see you on a health thread tomorrow though ).
