Curry

My dd, age 4, loves curry and rice, but we only have take-aways and she finds them a little too hot.

Does anyone have a really tasty (mild) vegetable curry recipe?

Every curry I have made turns out bland, so I don't bother, but dd is asking for Indian curries.

Jamie Oliver's recipes include curry leaves but I don't where to buy them!

Do you have an ethnic shop locally? Big supermarkets should have curry leaves I would have thought?

Good that your dd likes curry though, mine like a mild one but we just tend to make it as we go along. There may be a nice recipe on mumsnet alrady in recipes?

some here

Delia's lentil dahl recipe is nice - and mild. When I make it I leave out the tomato and 'hot it up' a bit more but you can make it as mild or spicy as you like.

Also using coconut milk or coconut cream can help to make a curry milder.

Why don't you make your normal one and then fry off some onion, garlic, cumin seeds, chilli etc to put into your portion?

Delia's egg and lentil curry is a favourite with my kids.

Or if you want to make your curry less bland without being too spicy try any combination or all of the following...
Fresh Ginger
Garlic
Lime
Fenugreek
Cumin
Corriander
Cinnamon

Curry leaves are also called methi, I think.

artifarti · 26/04/2009 17:15

If you do track down some curry leaves, they freeze well for ages.

SesIsCountingdowntheweeks · 26/04/2009 17:21

I sort of cheat and use pre-prepared curry packs from Rafi's Spice Box. here
They have all the herbs and spices and then you add the meat/veg.

You can make it your own depending on what you add.

Most importantly they are yummy and I know of several people that use them and have become v loyal customers!

Thanks all for your replies. I have tried to find curry leaves in our local Sainsburys, but will try again, this was a while ago. I love curry as well.

Methi is fenugreek I think - I may well be wrong though.

If you can't get fresh curry leaves, some of the supermarkets sell them in the dried herbs section, like bay leaves.

DarrellRivers · 26/04/2009 17:32

Curry leaves are different to Methi
Try local Asian grocer for dried curry leaves and they do add a lovely flavour
Methi is fenugreek as per Janeite

artifarti · 26/04/2009 17:40

If you Google Seasoned Pioneers they sell curry leaves. I have ordered from them before.

StirlingTheStrong · 26/04/2009 19:30

OMDB's Mild Korma is really nice.

MadamAnt · 26/04/2009 19:32

Oooh DuffyFluckling - that egg and lentil curry is one of our faves! Added bonus = it makes my poo smell all lovely and fenugreeky
