Help! Friends arriving at 10 - what should I give them?

Hi, DH has just told me that we have friends arriving late this evening. They won't have eaten. Can you think of a nice easy but delicious snack/ nibbles that I can give them with a drink?
Many thanks!

Curry is your best bet I reckon if they haven't eaten.

I'd chuck a casserole in the oven and serve with bread.

At 10pm the less faff the better

TheShipsCat · 24/04/2009 12:22

Do you think it needs to be that substantial?

Or if its just a snack... cheese on toast or cheese and biscuits

FrankMustard · 24/04/2009 12:23

I'd keep it light at that time of night and also so you can whip it all out when they arrive instead of having to time things and watch the oven - pitta breads, hummus, bit of cheese, salady stuff - and a nice chilled bottle of wine!
Have fun!

Hummus etc - good idea!

Another vote for informal, but if I hadn't eaten I'd be absolutely ravenous by 10 and a little snack would leave me going to bed hungry! (and probably pretty drunk tipsy too if then drinking on an empty stomach ).

But on the other hand there are plenty of people who just don't like eating late at night.

I reckon do something like FrankMustard suggests with a lot of things on offer in an informal way (maybe a quiche or potato salad as well for something a bit more filling) so that if anyone is very hungry they're catered for, but otherwise they can just pick, and enjoy the wine of course!

It's what I always serve when friends arrive - we live about 4 hours from our closest family and friends so it's always a matter of grabbing something quick and easy but light on the stomach!
Yo0u can go to town on the bits and bos if you're feeling hostess with the mostest - cherry toms, cucumber, peppers, beetroot, variety of bread rolls and type of bread etc
...arghh, got to go - my ds 23 mths is tearing a book apart....!

TheShipsCat · 24/04/2009 12:39

Good ideas, thanks. Ooh, could do blini.
Hope you managed to save the book FM!

Yes, blini would be lovely!
Thanks, yes,it wasn't a book after all - he takes all the books out of the shelf to "read" but in fact he'd got hold of an old cbeebies mag and that was what he was tearing!
Enjoy tonight's soiree!
