ice-packs for lunchboxes

Now that the weather is warming up and we're in summer uniform, it occurred to me that the DCs might benefit from ice packs in their lunchboxes. I don't fancy the idea of yogurts etc. sitting round all day in the cloakrooms chambree-ing nicely.

So 2 questions:

  1. Does anyone else include an ice pack in their child's lunchbox or am I being too PFB for my own good?
  1. If I'm allowed to use them, where would I obtain small ones... the only ones I have are the size of a paperback book and go in the coolbox.

Can you freeze pouches/cartons of juice. They defrost (ish) by lunch time and don't take up "extra room"

I always put an ice pack in, even in the winter. I buy a load of cheap flexible ones from Lakeland. Most supermarkets also have small versions of the non-flexible brick-style ice packs.

Yep, freeze juice, but make sure the sandwiches etc are well wrapped as they end up soggy from condensation otherwise.

I used to always do this like bran but have slacvkened. I often freeze those tubey yoghurt things and put them in though

Keep juice cartons in the freezer. Ice pack and lovely cold drink in one go!

(don't freeze bottles of water, they don't thaw in time for lunch and are tempting offensive weapons in the hands of small boys.....!)

I got some from Wilkinsosn, they are quite small pouches.

I use them for meat sandwiches usually. Don't know why!!

I got a small slim one from tesco which looks like the lakeland ones.

The thing about using frozed juice cartons is that your child doesn't have to remember to put it back in their lunch box and you won't be irritated when it goes missing. Which it will.

Yes we always have an ice pack even in winter and in a an insulated 'Thermos' sandwich box with a carrying strap so it does not melt too fast.

The school also puts the entre sandwich box in a fridge when we get there.
