Safe of unsafe? Freezing takeaway

Antdamm · 15/04/2009 15:02

DP and I get an Indian takeaway once a month. We bot get the same main meal, but only use one container of sauce. I love to make my own curries, and was wondering if anyone thinks it would be okay to freeze the unused sauce in a plastic container and use it next week to make my own curry.

Or is freezing stuff from a takeaway a major no-no??

Thanks

I freeze takeaways all the time.

I would say the sauce would be ok to freeze but steer clear of freezing takeaway rice.

Gorionine · 15/04/2009 16:17

I have done it a few times and it was ok really!

I freeze my take away leftovers. I can get 3/4 meals out of 1 portion !! I never reheat rice though

Gorionine · 15/04/2009 16:43

Why not freeze the take away rice?or reheat it?

MerlinsBeard · 15/04/2009 16:44

I have a weird fear of being ill from re heated rice!

if rice has been left at room temperature bacteria in it can multiply and release toxins which are not destroyed by reheating. If you cook the rice yourself you know how long it has been lying about but if it from a takeaway you dont know how long it has been cooked for and left sitting. The food standards agency says this:

I've heard that reheating rice can cause food poisoning. Is this true?

It's true that you could get food poisoning from eating reheated rice. But it's not actually the reheating that's the problem ? it's the way the rice has been stored before reheating.

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.

So, the longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that bacteria, or the toxins they produce, could stop the rice being safe to eat.

It's best to serve rice when it has just been cooked. If that isn't possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within one hour) and keep it in the fridge for no more than one day until reheating.

Remember that when you reheat any food, you should always check that it's steaming hot all the way through, and avoid reheating more than once.

I too freeze takeaways all the time - especially rice as you get it included here and dh prefers the special fried. I always reheat it really thoroughly though as above.

I never get rice with takeaways anyway - either nan (Indian) or noodles (chinky).
