Hi,

My 2 year old is at nursery two days a week and has a large meal at lunchtime with them and then has "tea" there at around 3.30pm, which is usually sandwiches/toast and fruit or yoghurt.

Can any of you give me any new ideas what to feed him early evening, he doesn't have much of an appetite due to what he has eaten that day already, but needs something as it is too long to go till breakfast, I don't want to repeat the sandwich/toast thing and he doesn't like soup, although he eats pretty much everything else except eggs.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

What about chicken strips? Cut a chicken breast into strips and marinade them in some plain yoghurt for 20 minutes to tenderise. You can add lemon, garlic, herbs, even curry powder, and so on to flavour if you want. Then pat dry and fry in oil or butter with a dot of oil in it. Serve with a dip that goes with the flavouring - pesto, ketchup, korma sauce, humous, etc.

Is he allergic to eggs or just doesn't like being confronted with them when they haven't been disguised? If he'll eat them in cakes and so on then you could make ricotta fritters with egg, flour and ricotta. Flavour with spinach, peas, sweetcorn, crumbled bacon etc for savoury, or with blueberries, maple syrup / honey, chopped nuts for sweet. These are also good for dipping.

Hope that helps? I'm watching this with interest as I always need new ideas too.

DS's nursery do the same thing and he usually ends up having rice/oat cakes with cheese and fruit.
I am very unimaginative (and it's hard when you've just got in from work!) so am also watching this thread with interest...

At the moment DS (2.5) loves toasted hot cross buns or any other kind of fruit loaf for supper.

Always relied on cereal for my DS when he was in full time nursery and needed a pre-bedtime snack. Weetabix, porridge, ready brek or mini shredded wheat with warm milk and banana were always winners.

Otherwise, he sometimes had:

Fingers of cheese on toast or eggy bread

Custard with fruit puree or stewed fruit

Slice of homemade pizza (make a really quick one with an English muffin cut in half, topped with tomato paste/passata, grated cheese, herbs and whatever toppings you like and bunged under the grill for a few mins)

Small bowl of macaroni cheese (make a quick version by some cream cheese and a bit of grated cheddar into hot pasta).
