Thinking of getting one to try with the kids but not sure how much I could get out of it...

Can just think of cheese, cheese and beans.....anyone got any other veggie ideas?

Chocolat spread is lush, but not very nutritious!

ellingwoman · 14/04/2009 20:36

banana
banana and honey
spaghetti hoops
any tinned fish like pilchards, sardines etc
macaroni cheese
in fact anything in a tin...

littlerach · 14/04/2009 20:37

Dh has avacado and cheese.

Cheese and tomato.

onion.

pesto.

We use ours quite a lot.

nickytwotimes · 14/04/2009 20:37

Oh and you can do an egg one - raw egg cracked in to the brread and it cooks in the toaster.

ilovespinach · 14/04/2009 20:40

just thought of an idea of my own

tomato pasta sauce, grated cheese, sweetcorn - like a little pizza toastie

thanks for the tip - will check the finances and look for one....toast and cheese on toast usually goes down well with ds2 so it could be a hit, even ds1 might try a pesto toastie

We hardly ever used our sandwich toaster but we have toasted sandwich's all the time now using our George Foreman grill, they're very nice on that and they're easier to clean

UKVeggieMum · 14/04/2009 20:55

Those toaster bags are great too, and only about £3.99 for two, and they last forever.

notamumyetbutoneday · 15/04/2009 10:19

Good lord I could murder a toastie right now. Damn you all and your delicious combinations! Not pesto though. yuck!

Cheese ham and tomato is my fave
tuna and cheese nice as well

TrillianAstra · 15/04/2009 10:22

I like proper sandwich toasters because they make that special triangle shape.

George Foreman grill is more like having a coffee-shop panini toaster

bamboostalks · 15/04/2009 10:26

Do not buy one, they are a waste of money, you will use it for a month and then put it away, they are a PITA to clean. But toastabags. Triangles are nice but not worth it.

KingRolo · 15/04/2009 10:30

Another vote for tuna and cheese - was a uni staple.

It's true that they are a royal pita to clean though. I'm a serious toastie lover but even I have now relegated the toastie machine to the back of the cupboard.

ShowOfHands · 15/04/2009 10:37

We use ours a lot.

Just clean while still semi-hot.

Pizza toasties are yummy. Tomato sauce, onion, peppers, cheese.

Shambolic · 15/04/2009 10:43

Cheese and onion.... mmmm

My mum has a sarnie maker but TBH I always (but always!)have something involving cheese so just pop it under the grill!

mrsrawlinson · 15/04/2009 10:56

I have a very dim view of sandwich toasters. SUCH a pain to clean. However, my Diablo is essentially the same thing and can be bunged in the dishwasher - bonus! It's essentially two little frying pans hinged together that you fill with toastie and clamp shut, then cook on the hob. Best. Invention. Ever.

cluttercup · 15/04/2009 10:59

Toastabags are the way forward! No need to slather on the butter (for those of us who could do without the extra calories!!!), minimal cleaning and fun to make with the kids.

littlerach · 15/04/2009 11:13

So would you say the toaster bags are worth buying?

eidsvold · 15/04/2009 11:13

love cheese and onion. Ours just wipes clean.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 15/04/2009 11:15

I bought a cheapo one from Tesco, about £8. Serves us perfectly well.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 15/04/2009 11:16

mine is a wipe clean one too. The plates are non stick so I don't see what is hard about wiping over with a damp cloth ?

cluttercup · 15/04/2009 11:17

I think toastsabags are worth buying but have only had mine for a couple of weeks so can't say how long they last.

bamboostalks · 15/04/2009 11:22

It's not just the cleaning it's the storing, they clutter up the workspace and if you put it away then you never use it. Tostabags!

MrsBoo · 15/04/2009 11:26

We use ours - my DC love them, and as they're both such fussy eaters its worth it to get them to eat something.
Mine is very old, but non-stick so dead easy to clean, and just lives in a cupboard stored for the next time.

I also have toastabags, but they dont fit very well into my toaster, so are never a huge success - and anyway my DD loves the tiny triangles that come from the S/toaster.

brightwell · 15/04/2009 11:42

Mine's ancient, over 25 years old. We still use it regularly, my all time favourite is cheese & mango chutney. But also like banana & raisin, cheese & onion, cheese & tomato

PadDad · 15/04/2009 11:46

mrsrawlinson, i've been thinking of getting our diablo out.

you've prompted me to just now.

all those who think the makers are a PITA to clean should check out a diablo.

duchesse · 15/04/2009 11:50

We use ours several times a month at least- several times a week sometimes. It's a 20 plus year old Tefal that I won in a raffle in 1989, and still going strong.
